I've been to The Back Room a few times and it's always been extremely crowded There are many bars that are meant to be packed with people, but this place just isn't one of them. The couches, coffee tables, and general set-up of the bar makes it really difficult to move around, and so the atmosphere is completely lost. Drinks are pricey but very much on par with your typical Manhattan bar. The mixed drinks are very weak and served in teacups which makes them smaller and difficult to hold after a while. What I dislike the most about this place is that the bartenders are very rude and arrogant. I have no desire to spend my money on a business that can't even find a way to show some respect and common decency.

The atmosphere may easily excite freshly minted wall street money mangers and other farmland shut-ins newly replanted to NYC from the midwest, and the oh-so-jaded bartenders may think they are native New Yorkers, but there is no excuse or reason for bartenders to insult customers, lie about it, or act like asses toward their clientele.

I've enjoyed visiting this bar religiously for the last two years. It's always been a good time, albiet very crowded at times. This last weekend when my husband and I brought some friends to the Back Room, we asked for 3 "Bees Knees" drinks. The blonde female bartender scowled at my husband and asked, "what's that??" in a very nasty tone. My husband proceeded to tell her that we had been ordering that drink for the last 2 year and that it was on their menu the last time we had been to there. She looks at us like we were crazy, throws a menu at us, and proceeds to tell us "well when was the last time you were here!? Our menu has changed." Ummm... 3 months ago actually. All the while she was looking at us in the most arrogant nasty way. All this attitude because we tried to order a drink from their old drink menu??? By the way, it was unbelievably dead in there that Saturday night and along with the drink menu and bartender changes, they changed the DJ. The music was so boring and cliche. Aside from the kitschy vibe, the Back Room has nothing else going for it. Sorry to say... but this place is officially D.O.N.E note to the owner: play better music, get rid of the door guy who doesn't allow in women who are wearing fur (I don't wear it, but who is he to judge), fire all the arrogant rude bartenders, hire some who actually realize that they are in a SERVICE industry and you might be able to get your business back to where is was a year ago.

I've been here twice and live right around the corner. At first, you'll be wowed by the secret entrance, the faux speak easy atmosphere, and red velvet ambience. It's cool they serve their drinks in teacups. The high price is not so cool, but it keeps out the riffraff. So yes, a little like a themepark--fun if you're in the mood.

A great place to bring out-of-towners and girls you want to impress with your "insider knowledge."

i finally made it to the back room, i'd been hearing about it for a while now. the alley entrance is very unique, then you actually go in and the bar is beautiful. it was a busy night but, not overly so. the actual bar was kinda busy but we got our drinks pretty quickly (in tea cups!) and they were delicious (rosemary's baby is awesome!). the cocktail menu is pretty unique, with out being pretentious or over priced. the music and the vibe was great, we had a blast and i'll definitely be back for more!

I was thrilled to show my visiting friends this venue, I didn't know what to expect. It's such a nice environment, interior and the teacups makes it even a better experience.

Last night The Back Room was just what the heat wave ordered. Cold air, cold drinks, and a hot scene. I even saw some of the guys from the band Muse there, just hanging out with the crowd. The DJ was playing some tribute Amy Winehouse, and there wasn't a single person not dancing. I rarely stay out til 3am, but I couldn't help it last night. Best night ever LES style. I will definitely take my friends back to this little secret gem.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
