sucks

The doormen tell lies to guests as a matter of course, and they are oriented toward getting a lot of money for the bar instead of pulling a good crowd. The drinks are expensive and nothing special. Bar service is slow. The crowd is nothing special, lots of tourists. They don't allow photography but they do nothing to stop people from taking pictures. The DJs are ok. The hotel lobby you walk through is beautiful. The only real pro is that you can smoke on the rooftop. There are about a million better places, no matter what you're looking for. If you are actually looking for a touristy rooftop bar, try 230 Fifth, or Le Bain, or mad46. All are better.

Annoying Manager and Door....

By NKP421 on 3/26/2012

  • No, I would not go back!

Had set up a b-day party in the private den for which I was told we would have the whole area and was specifically told that my guest would not have an issue getting in (especially because it was raining) and that if we had people get into the private area, security would kindly ask them to leave, etc. When we arrived, our space was already occupied, we patiently worked with the venue to resolve that situation without annoying the other patrons. However, no one did anything, and Christian Morasco (the manager) was particularly awful and unpleasant to deal with. Half of our guest did not get in, we could not get the hostess to serve drinks to the private den fast enough, so our guests started going to the bar to get drinks. The manager then told us that our group was not spending enough money (because the only tabs they were looking at were the ones that the one hostess for our group of 40-50 was trying to serve). Anyhow, truth be told, I am glad I did not set up something bigger and at least saved face on that front. And given that the excuses the venue was making up were particularly bias, I am certain that I (and most of my guest) will not be spending any money there anymore. On the plus side, the views are nice, the drinks were good (when we were able to get them), and the music was good. However, the elevator situation does create a huge bottleneck, which is compounded by poor management and the unfriendly door policy.

going for round four tonight

Well, gosh, I'm sorry to hear some of my fellow citizens have not enjoyed their experiences at the Ava lounge. I don't mean to diminish their down times but I've been there on three separate occasions and going back tonight for a fourth. I've been there on a date (another man); once with my mother; and once with my half-sister and her mother. Okay - I admit - not a fierce city pad; really. I suppose I think of it as a great place to take tourists. (Tonight I'm meeting friends from my homeland there. I figure the views will amuse them.) It's not flawless; the food / nibblies menu really does lack flare. But the staff has been nothing but extremely courteous. The crowd very diverse (but very straight, I think) and in general it's quite pleasant. OH I forgot - went there one other time with my city friend's mother when she was in town. It's not cool or hip but it's perfectly acceptable for certain kinds of nights. The views are STUNNING.

'Bad Business"

By LuvNLife on 12/15/2008

Overall I was extremely disappointed in the Ava Lounge. The bouncers were incredibly rude and unprofessional. Even though my organization reserved space there for a holiday party, not all of our co-workers got into the party. I watched the bouncers lie to people on line (some of which were my coworkers) and claim that there were too many people in the lounge and therefore they needed to wait on line, when actually the place was not crowded at all. The bouncers argued, were rude, and because of their unfair treatment and (what I felt like was discrimination), not everyone from my organization got into the Ava lounge and was forced to miss their company holiday party. The DJ did his best to play popular music but he just wasn't able to keep the crowd engaged. The best part about this lounge is the view and the people I went with, but that's not worth being mistreated. Because of the way we were treated at this place I will never go back and could not recommend it.

Nightmare Experience in "Dream" hotel

By PJM11 on 6/26/2008

  • No, I would not go back!

From the moment we walked into the Dream Hotel, our nightmare began. Its pretty hard to dislike anywhere when alcohol and friends are combined - but the rooftop bar at Dream totally missed the mark with it's pretentious attitude and strict rules. We wanted to leave before we'd finished our first drinks. If they werent so overpriced we would have. There were more bouncers than waiters - and all of them wanted to make drinking with friends as difficult and unpleasant as possible. More than once, members of our party felt like we were back in school, and on detention! There is a cheap Irish bar down the road - and it turned out to be great fun. Go there instead!

Way overrated

By NYLifer on 7/12/2007

Crowded because its small not because of demand to be there.... decent view but nothing special, cozy in a claustrophopic kind a way. Finally, lunatic bouncer guy accused my very professional party of 5 business people of swiping a cheesy LED votive candle. To begin, no one in my group would have done such a thing but more importantly you could buy a dozen of these things at a dollar store, whats the motivation??! Bottom line - dont waste your time

Don't let the images fool you . . .

Firstly I have to credit the Dream Hotel's marketing team, as their website and promotional images really sell the lounge as a venue of modern luxury with fantastic city views reminiscent of the great Windows of the World but don't let their work fool you. The Ava Lounge is on the PH floor of the Dream Hotel. You get the impression that they are trying hard to provide you with a Hudson Hotel experience, that is until you get into the cramped elevator and enter what to me was a disappointing reality of the creative photography that brought you here in the first place. The bar is a small and narrow space with average views. The bar seats a max of 6-7 people to give you a rough idea of the width of the space. The lounge has a roof-top, which is more shabby-chic than modern-lux. The service isn't too bad and the prices are standard for midtown. I went for after work drinks and it was pretty full even at 6pm. Entering the lounge is pretty much hassle free which is refreshing.
