Blue & Gold Tavern on 7th Street

that rude chunky bartender is long gone. they have a nicer staff of people. the place hasn't really changed as far as decor & prices. A lot of people complain about the portion size of the drinks & that they use measurements but the prices are cheap & you're basically paying for what you get...they're not over priced & you can get top shelf alcohol for very low price. it's especially nice around winter when the Christmas wreaths are up, just gives you that warm cozy feeling. this is a place you can just chill out with your friends, play pool & listen to some cool music. i don't know about bikers as the review mentioned, maybe in the 80's but the crowd here varies from NYU students to artsy professionals....all the old timers have passed away, years ago.

Cheap, but the bartender...

I’ve lived in NYC for 8 years with 5 years as an NYU student and was not aware of this place until last weekend! The reviews about this place are totally accurate. It is small, smelly, and very cramped (at least it was on a Friday night). The drink prices are unbeatable though! The bartender situation is absolutely true. The female bartender, which I now see has complaints about her in reviews going back over 3 years, should not be tending bar. She was giving my friend a dirty look as he ordered, which I thought was strange. At that point, I had no idea just how bad she really was. Later, my friend’s drink order came to $8, so he gave her a 10. She didn’t even bother giving him change. There was a girl at a table who had an annoying, shrill voice. She wasn’t loud, just kind of annoying. The female bartender had the bouncer remove the girl. Needless to say, the girl and her friends proceeded to get into a loud argument with the ‘bulltender.’ I’ll be back at some point when I need a cheap drink in the East Village.

RUDE, and expensive, tiny drinks

I felt strongly enough about this dump to take time to write a review, if that says anything. The chunky female bartender with tattooed arms does not deserve any type of employment with such a foul attitude. I was told to "get out of her face" because I'm "annoying her" after trying to order two drinks with items that they did not carry. In any type of REAL JOB, that type of demeanor would mean an automatic pink slip. It's unfortunate that this type of personality warrants a paying job. This place is a disgusting dive, drinks are miniscule, and the quality of service makes me want to never, ever return. Awful.

Great, cheap place, love the decor!! The female bartender is rude and a little crazy or frustrated, who knows. I'll still keep going back there, though. Just love it!

Bad Bartenders won't go back

By kmac1 on 9/12/2010

Both the bartenders here were extremely rude - we came in with a group of people and weren't treated well at all. I don't expect to have fantastic service at a dive bar, but I would expect the bartender serving me to be civil at least. The female bartender (who others have complained about in previous reviews) yelled at my friends for no reason and was blatantly rude throughout the night. When my other friend went to pay for his drinks, he took out exact change and then was going to leave a tip on the bar after paying. Upon seeing exact change, the male bartender gave us a lot of attitude and said "you have to give us a tip for those", clearly expecting that we weren't going to tip. I understand that they probably don't always get tips, but they were unnecessarily rude to us after we waited forever for 3 cheap beers. We were already going to give a tip, but after how rude he was, have to say I was much less likely to give him the normal trip price and didn't even want to stay. After both experiences, we definitely won't be going back. There are plenty of other dive bars in the neighborhood that you can have nice/fun bartenders that won't ruin your fun night out.

Rude Bartender

  • No, I would not go back!

I went to Blue Gold on Tuesday. I walked in and stood a few feet back from the bar to pick out my drink, and noticed that the bartender was saying something to me, but I couldn't hear her because it was loud. She finally ended up screaming at me, not to be heard, but because she was frustrated. (I can tell because she vented to other customers immediately after: "can you believe this guy?") When I bought a drink (after she kept me waiting a while) I didn't tip her, and when I went back, she refused to serve me again even though I specifically told her why I hadn't tipped her. She didn't seem to understand or care that it's inappropriate to scream at your customers.

Best place for a "single malt tasting"

At $4 - FOUR DOLLARS - a shot, there is no other place in NYC (other than your living room) where you can taste seven different single malts in one place, for under $30. Macallan, Laphroaig, Talisker, Balvenie and others are available at the same ridiculously low price as Black label.

Sure the place seems divey, but it is populated with mostly yuppies. What really pisses me off is that they actually measure out the booze, where are we, Britain? When I want a glass of whiskey to sip on I want more than just the bottom eighth inch of my cup full.
