Burgers and Barflies

Yes, I would go back!

I have been to Corner Bistro a few times, but my visit last week was by far my most enjoyable. I strolled in on a beautiful spring day at around 12 noon and there was plenty of space for me to sit. I quickly ordered a cheeseburger and a Bloody Mary from the attentive and jolly bartender. The burger was enormous and tasty, if not a bit messy. The Bloody Mary was a bit heavy on the horseradish, but otherwise passable. For 20 bucks I got a cheeseburger, Bloody Mary and a McSorley's. For me though, the real draw are the regulars who sit at the end of the bar. Listening to their conversations and opinions is what makes a place like this so great . If there was one thing I would change would be the stools at the bar. They are just a bit too low, making eating at the bar a bit awkward. A must visit for any New Yorker.

Burger heaven

Yes, I would go back!

I finally tried this popular West Village spot after reading rave reviews in this very magazine. I wasn't disappointed. The burgers are among the best (and cheapest) in the city, even if they overcook the bacon for my taste. But where else in Manhattan can you find draft beer for $2.50? They play a nice mix of late 50s R'n'B and Be-Bop with the occasional Stones track thrown in, and there are three TV screens showing three different sporting events, all of which keeps you entertained enough as you queue for a table. Last night I went back with my girlfriend and we sat at the bar, where such aforementioned pleasures combined to the point where I almost achieved a blissful sensory overload. Burger heaven.

Overrated

Dined on 12/26/05 at 4:45PM Though relatively cheap, two burgers, w/cheese & bacon, arrived luke warm at best on a room temperature Walmart bun; ordered medium rare but on rare, cold side. Tasted OK but not juicy. Bacon was thick and tasty. Cheese mere American slice. Fries thin, ok, but of frozen variety; Heinz Ketchup watered down; Cola served in a glass mug with too much ice and little cola. Two bacon cheeseburgers w/lettuce, tomato & 3 sweet canned pickle slices, two fries & one cola billed at $20.50 incl. tax [not incl. tip].

Smart people

Yes, I would go back!

Best thing about the Corner Bistro is the intelligence of the afternoon patrons and two main bartenders. Lively and fascinating conversation abounds from older people, who leave when the tunnel and bridge crowd comes in, about 6 pm. There is also a great selection of blues and jazz as background music.

Crowded....but damn good.

Yes, I would go back!

A crazy atmosphere for new customers. Gotta love the cheap beer and great burgers. The fries are so-so. Be prepared to do the Corner Bistro "shuffle" down the bar until you get served. You might be a tad bit drunk by the time your food arrives. Nothing wrong with that on a weekend evening!

Can't say where's the beef here but what is the big deal. Decor is dive and so is the way they give you the food. eating from paper plates was a turn off. My friends love it though....

Yes, I would go back!

Always crowded, we've run into many of the same poeple (bar flies) everytime we go. Invariably you'll get some flack from the bar tenders if you don't order quickly. We go for the cheap eats and even cheaper beerÑand the guys.

over-hyped, over-crowded, good burger

Yes, I would go back!

They make a good burger, inexpensive, and the beer at $2 for a 10 oz glass is right on. I love those slightly undersized and Nice Price glasses. But I've been in several times now, and its always elbow to elbow, line from the back of the room to the door, people coming and going, cold air coming in, blowing the smoke back in your face. It should have a nice vibe, and does pretty well there despite the crowding. But is the same kind of vibe and flavor and food and prices and everything else that you can get at any good bar in any town in the world. Just with fire-code levels of people added on. Who needs it for a burger that you could cook at home and beer that you could buy in the store and have some friends over instead?
