Good Selection, Assho%$ Staff

By James717 on 3/14/2011

  • No, I would not go back!

There is a good selection of beer and spirits, but it seems as if the bartenders have some sort of attitude for no apparent reason. In addition, the place did smell terrible. Not sure why they cant purchase a mop and some soap and wash the place at the end of the night. I guess its the recession right. But then whats with the bad attitudes...

Avoid the too old tattooed bus "boy"

By MrMole on 10/19/2010

  • No, I would not go back!

I've been going here off and on since the mid-90s but it's definitely seen better days. The selection looks great on the chalkboards, but good luck hearing if it's actually in stock. But the cask ales are great. Unfortunately the bar staff hate their jobs and are notorious slow. Worse, the bus "boy" (who's in his 30s and looks pretty burned out for a job that requires no brain power) who I accidentally bumped into when it was crowded, physically threatened me in front of tons of people. They really don't care for your business one way or the other. That said, try their new Williamsburg branch which is very relaxing. Too relaxing perhaps, as there's never anyone in there and it might not last long.

Smells like Pee

By anonnn on 3/4/2010

  • No, I would not go back!

I ignored the negative reviews and regret it. Went with a group of friends primed to enjoy a night of bourbon. d.b.a. was pretty empty on wednesday night, which was good, but it had that sour fraternity basement smell of beer and piss. Drinks were ordered but the manhattans were the worst we'd had; the beer was fine. We moved on and had the late arrivals meet us elsewhere.

ABSURD

Pay no attention to the selection, and then once you pick something, make sure you have a backup list because your first choice probably won't be in stock. The bartender was a total snob and seemed to busy herself doing absolutely nothing. She told my friend she didin't have a card on her tab when we could see it right there on the counter. She threw out my friends drink and then refused to replace it. My friend was even polite about it and was like, "can you give me a at least half a glass?" She ended up clearing her drink a second time - and this time my friend was like, "excuse me, I'm not finished with my drink" My friend snapped and said "you're being a b*tch" the owner came over and yelled at her to "get out of my bar, you called my friend a b*tch" It was just a lame experience. There are so many other options in this city where you don't have to be served by self-righteous, spoiled children.

Great selection, but terrible experience

By Make_It_A_Double on 9/9/2007

Take one glance at the chalkboard menus and you'll realize that you're in a bar that has a great selection of beers, whiskey, and more. Maybe on a non-weekend it would have been a better experience, but I went on a Saturday and it was terrible. The bartender that served me truly made it seem like he was doing me such a huge favor to serve me a drink. He would roll his eyes and then look over at me and say "yeah?". It took 15 minutes just to get a drink and it was on the weak side I might add. I'm intelligent enough to know that maybe I just caught him on a bad night, but first impressions are a big deal to me and I will not be going back in the future.

Great place!

I'm the first to understand receiving bad service, especially since I've been in the restaurant biz 3 times in my life. This place is great! Great selection of beers and the staff has always been good when I've been there. If you love beer, then you should definitely check it out!

Good drink, good atmosphere - and you can have good food!

By Nevony on 7/12/2007

The beer (and whiskey) selection is superb. On summer days, the patio is a great place to hang out. The service has always been fine. The great food? Well, they don't serve any but you can order in from any of the many excellent restaurants in the neighborhood - I recommend Paquito's. If I didn't already live in the neighborhood, I'd move here just to be close!

DBA is Da Bomb

By jldooley61 on 4/21/2007

  • Overall Rating: 10
  • Yes, I would go back!

Maybe I just happend to know one of the bartenders personally, but I have never been treated rudely, nor have I see others treated rudely, at DBA. Sometimes when things get crazy, like on Fri or Sat night, you may have to wait a bit to get a beer or a scotch. That's because it is busy. You can if it's busy by how many folks deep it is at the bar. Maybe the reviewers who think the bartenders were rude were rude themselves because they had to wait 10 mintures to order a beer and took it out on the bartenders. Any of you ever tended a bar, by the way????

Great bar

By ArchStanton on 1/22/2007

  • Yes, I would go back!

Don't believe the other disgruntled, pinhead reviewers. They've obviously never been in an East Village bar & would be better off at the Houlihan's in Times Square. I've been to d.b.a. many times in NY and New Orleans and it's one of the best bars around. Great vibe and atmosphere, awesome beer list, lots of liquors to choose from, and cool people. The First Ave location is fabulous and the people are cool. It just gets a bit too crowded on Fri and Sat nights with all the hipsters and bridge & tunnel folk, but what native New Yorker goes out barhopping on a Fri or Sat, anyway?

Enough already

By oldfort on 1/4/2007

  • No, I would not go back!

I have been to d..b.a. twice. I went back the second time only because I thought the surly, rude service encountered the first time might have been an abberation. Zowie, I was wrong!! It took 15 minutes to order a beer the second time, and the bartender poured the wrong one. I finished that beer and it took another 10 minutes to get the bartender's attention to ask for a fresh one. Clearly, these people hate their jobs. Why don't they quit?? Why haven't they been fired?? Whole Foods has nearly the same selection of beers (at cheaper prices) and friendly service staff too..d.b.a. will be d.o.a. unless it solves this problem soon.
