No standing!!

NO STANDING, its a rule! Their web site indicates if there is a wait, they will call you when seating becomes available - this kind of sounds like they are talking about dining only, but be aware, this applies to the bar too. Their rule of everyone needing to be seated is odd in a city of bars where you can sit OR STAND as you like and enjoy your evening. We experienced a few other snags - one is a literal snag - there is an exposed nail on top of one of their very small banquets. The dining area is cramped. The air conditioning was apparently on, but my group saw no evidence of this - we were melting in our small banquet the whole time and we left as a result. One positive is that the menu is filled with interesting old new york cocktails and snacks. But for the weird sitting rule and sweltering conditions, I would have stayed to enjoy more of the menu.

I've been here several times (with another visit planned for tomorrow night) and have been more impressed each time. Never had a problem from the door guy, and when there has been a wait, they've been happy to take my cell number so I can get a beer at Cherry Tavern Down the street. I would never go at peak hours on a Friday or Saturday, but have done early evening there on those days on occasion with never more than a short wait and no sense of rush inside. Sitting at the bar is always a treat to see the bartenders at work and get a little history lesson from them on what I'm drinking. The bar won my permanent allegiance when I expressed a real appreciation for one of their drinks and the bartender printed out the recipe for me.

A couple of Saturdays ago my girlfriend and I slipped in to Death&Co for a couple of drinks and ended up staying a better part of the night. We each tried 5 or 6 different drinks and loved all of them! I highly recommend the Oaxaca old fashioned. After a few drinks we decided it was time for a few bites to eat so we tried the veggies with fondue, crab cakes with tuna sashimi, and homemade pretzels. All of them perfect accompaniments to our cocktails. Can't wait to go back soon!

The drinks are great -- and urgently necessary after dealing with a ridiculous and absurd doorman. My table was given away because my guest was a half-block away, visible as he approached the door. I won't go again.

Drinks were thoughtfully considered and executed. Just be aware of their no standing policy, which is great in theory but can be a little tense in practice.

This place looked appealing because it seemed to have a sort of 'used-to-be-a-hotspot' thing. i.e. cheap cocktails, no waiting. It turns out that the drinks are good-ish, the food is a middling take on standard bar fare, and the decor is sort of the budget version of the gothic speakeasy. The slovenly boy at the door is the killer. He made sure to alienate everyone who entered the bar. I just wanted to say to him "dude, there's no one pushing to get in. be nice. it's better for business." So many other places do it better.

well executed drinks come at a sensible price ($12), and your experience is dictated by a few obvious factors - 1) when you go; 2) how you carry yourself and ultimately; 3) what you order. civilized human beings are treated to a thoughtful menu of drinks (leaning toward whiskey, gin and tequilla) carefully constructed and expertly produced by creative and passionate bartenders. living in the LES, i've never had a problem getting in, and if there is a wait they will take your number and call you without attitude if none is given (grab a drink at the cherry tavern while you wait).

Excellent Scene; Equally impressive drinks

My girlfriend and I went this last Saturday and got right in; she looked stunning but it was because we lucked out. Another couple was just leaving aftyer being there for almost 2 hours, which ended up being how long we stayed. The un-crowded intimate feel and friendly servce combined with a diverse range of specialty drinks, wines and surprisingly nice food to make the night one to remember. From the doorman to the waitress to the other patrons, we were treated very well and felt comfortable in the distinct surroundings. It is now one of our favorites and we look forward to going back. It was certainly no more expensive than what we expected, and we had several appetizers as well as a glass of champagnme to top the night off.

Over-hyped and Unprofessional

The drinks weren't bad, but definitely over-hyped. The real problem with our experience, however, started when at some point during the evening a WATER glass disappeared from our table - perhaps the waiter took it? In any case, they accused us of stealing it, adding it to our bill for $20 (I suppose the expensive glassware must be responsible for their overall pricing policy), and threatening they had video surveillance (I'd like to see of what exactly)... Watch out for the waitress Jessica, she's apparently running some sort of water glass racketeering ring down there. Pretty pathetic, especially given how much we spent that night...
