I was a patron of this bar for 30 years, seldom missing a day or night. As a would-be painter, the place was a living room for all of the artists in the area. Great bartenders, great food, beautiful wait staff, it had everything. I say had because if was forced out of N.Y. in 1994 by the rents and the smoking police. But even today, I can send friends from New Orleans to the place and they are treated with superb service and a good time. Long live Fanelli.

Fanelli Cafe was my living room for 30 years until the smoking ban took place. My memories are so wonderful and positive about the place that I cry just thinking about ihem. The many terrific friends I met on a daily basis kept me happy and content for three decades. The wait staff (we called them waitresses in those days) were always beautiful and friendly. Larry Trapp was the king of bartenders. I moved to New Orleans in 1994 and send all of my friends to the Fanelli Cafe when they visit New York. (By the way, the name is NOT "Fanelli's"!)

Why isn't the fact that Fanelli's is the third oldest drinking establishment in New York City along with a rich history not mentioned. Their history is posted in the Prince Street window and handouts are in a box inside the front door. In addition, they have a collection of their 19th century saloon licenses on the back room restaurant wall.

First went there 24 years ago, with my then-boyfriend. Friends who lived the neighborhood said the food was good. It was more than good! It was fabulous. Shepherd's pie and pasta primavera, a bottle of wine and great conversation with people sitting nearby. For about $20. We fell in love on that trip to NYC and partially credit a wonderful evening at Fanelli's. Now husband of 23 years and I took our kids there 18 years later - they loved it, too. We met a great character there this time who was drunk as a skunk and told us the whole history of the bar. I pointed out to my family later that the "drunk" was wearing $400 loafers and Brooke's Brothers casual! You never know who you'll meet there.

First visitied NY in Dec 2004 and popped in here for some soup on a cold christmas afternoon after buying an ipod next door. It was the best soup i ever tasted. Was in NY again last week and simply had to call in to see if they could satisfy my hunger for a second time. Did they What? I had the best burger i've ever taseted. Melt in the mouth it was. I cannot wait to go back again. Good looking staff to boot. They should put this bar on a plane and fly it back to Ireland. As Arnie once said "I'll be back"

Stumbled upon this place during a hard days shopping. The service was great despite how busy it was and the Maryland crabcake sandwich was to die for. Can't wait to go back.

Just to sit down and grab a burger was great. Service was quick and responsive. Would definitely hit it again.

OK, so my fondest memories of Fanelli's have taken place before 11 in the morning, but they do make the best bloody mary going. They start with Absolut Citron, and make each one individually. Toss back two of these devils and the night before feels like it's still going strong. I think it's best to just pop in for a coupla pops, chat with the bartender, crusty regular or Sasha, the owner, and head on to the next place.
