Holiday in Cambodia

I love a good dive bar BUT... One Saturday late afternoon after hearing about how "bizarre" this bar is and how even more "bizarre" the owner/bartender is, my friend (who had braved this place before) and I ventured in. Taking a seat at the bar after sizing up the joint with the others who were there to watch the show, I broke one of my cardinal bar rules: at a place like this, only order things in sealed bottles. Finally getting the owners attention after watching him stagger around the bar muttering things in what sounded like German and English - WASTED. I asked for a Jack and Ginger. EEK! He thrust his hand in a dirty bucket, pulled out a handful of ice, got approximately half of it in the glass and proceeded to make the cocktail. I picked it up and took a sip, "bleahk", it was "not right" and then I held it up the light...I cannot even tell you what was floating in it. My friend and I ran, we ran straight for the door...

What Happened to this place

I have been coming here for years with my friends. This bar was cozy and great to relax, listen to the jukebox and talk. Drinks are cheap and good and there is no fluff. We showed up last night and walked into a comedian? This bar was perfect the way it was. I am truely dissapointed.

A True Dive Bar...

What can I say? This bar has remained the same after every other bar in the neighborhood has died and gone to yuppie hell. Yes it's dirty. The beauty of it is that you won't be forced to endure a bunch of Wall Street kids singing "Hang on Snoopy" or whatever the hell that song is called... The drinks are TRUELY cheap as shit and the music ain't half bad. Atmospherically, I'd give this a 10,10,10!!! God Bless America and bars like this one. You gotta love em'.

A New York Landmark

I spent so much time here in the mid-to-late 1980s with RISD pals. For sleazy its the real thing. Great cheap liquor drinks in little glasses. I am not a true drinker but this somehow made drinking outrageous. The meaning of blind drunk can be experienced here. Memories of hanging out with friends here made me yearn for the old days. If you are 21, go hang out here, you may take home a few memories yourself one day.

Cheapest Dirtiest Drinks in Manhattan

It's dark, it's dingy, it's upholstered in duct tape. The bartender is more loaded than the patrons, so forget cosmos or margaritas -- you'll be luck to get a good vodka tonic. This is a beer and shooters place. The crowd is always interesting and the jukebox is country rockin'. It's a great place for celebs like me to hide out.

My Youth in a Glass

My brother and I logged countless hours in this smoky, grungy, divey hellhole of an auxiliary living room during the late '80s and early '90s. I met several memorable boyfriends here, as well as a number of good, long time friends. Like your living room (if you weren't picky about cleaning the ash trays) with cheap booze. Excellent jukebox in its own very specific way. Crusty bar staff - the only kind to have, if you ask me. A fine place to hang out. Low style, but NOT low life.

A great place at any time, but Sunday's with the NY Times and at the bar, Stephan and his friends, yelling about the news in seven different languages. One of the best juke boxes in the city. There is absolutely NO "vibe", here. It's "come one, come all". On a busy Saturday night, Stephan may get bored or drunk and close the bar for no reason as early as 1 AM. A joy in the East Village.
