One really ought to judge this venue by standards that accord with its aspirations. The place is perfect just as it is, considering what it is. Agree with the characterization "one step above a backyard barbecue." Most locals don't have backyards. We'd like one, but this isn't Brooklyn. The beer was a bit overpriced but well worth it because what one is actually paying for is the rare chance to enjoy, legally, a beer in the park. Fab sunset view. We ordered beer only, if I recall correctly. Just two of us. No problem getting and keeping a table. That said, it was a weekday evening, which maybe helped -- but I don't know. In short: given a choice of sundowner beer-drinking opportunities, I'd always opt for the park with the huge trees and fab view over, for example, the smog-and-noise-infused sidewalk type of venue.

I found the cafe to be a wonderful quiet escape from the city that you would be hard pressed to know is just beyond the tree line. It has one the most beautiful views of the sunset I have seen in my time in New York. Although the restaurant was quite busy - mostly local regulars - I found the staff very friendly and helpful, albeit a bit informal and relaxed, although this was quite fitting as it is a very simple and informal restaurant. The food was slightly overpriced but this is the sort of place you could sit and enjoy a cooling summer evening with just a few drinks, and contrary to the above review, there was no indication that you are only allowed a table if you are getting food. There was also relaxed live music playing the night we were there, all in all I have a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I would surely go back!

This place will only let you get a table if you're getting food, but once the bar fills up you're left standing around in the middle of the deck---also not good. The food was good if a little pricey, the service had no idea what they were doing. This place isn't nice enough to try again.

Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
