I came here in the evening with friends, lured by $5 cocktails and a happy hour ending at 9. The DJ was playing varied tunes from his Mac, everything from jazz to classic rock, and kept the volume at a moderate level (the music could not be heard from outside, neither from the entrance nor the porch). The bartender was one of the friendliest we'd encountered in a while, considering NYC's bar scene. The cocktails were well spiked for the price. The porch in the back was quiet-at least they provide someplace for people to comfortably get their nicotine fix instead of forcing them out front. The best part of this joint? The luscious red upholstered couches and dim red lighting. I'd say romantic, but the pictures on the wall, artistic nudes and borderline smut does not make for a good date. The tab at the end of the night 'twixt the three of us was about $100, tip included. Considering we had about 15-17 drinks, not bad. Definitely will be going there again in the future.

Madame X can fuck itself. Their back porch is louder than all hell and they have no consideration for their neighbors. Smoking marijuana and having drunk college kids on sunday night screaming until 4am is unacceptable. Part of being a good neighborhood bar is caring about your neighbors...I hope this place gets shutdown.

I was there last night with my female friend. Unlike the pubs around it, bar was not packed (which kinda allowed us to have a good time). Brand name works and has potential but please....place is a dump. I really like the decor/color & concept but the furniture choice is a retarded; Beat up couches with hanging buttons & cotton leaking out. Some couches are firm to sit on but others u sink in, loosing all posture and especially girls with skirts (u will have issues). Sounds trivial but once you are there, its not comfy. Couches need to be cleaned, i felt dirty sitting on them. Music was hip/hop & actually good old school but DJ kept turning it up and blasting it. Place was not clean, bathroom run down and bartenders could use a few smiles. If you 'owners' want some cache of the brand name and sell $7 beers, upgrade your furniture, redo ur bathroom, get happier bartenders/staff and less deaf DJ. Till then, folks i will call this a hole in the wall with red lights (the reason why im even giving a 6).

I'm the owner of Madame X. I've contacted the management of this site multiple times over the years asking for another reviewer to stop by. Not only was this reviewer obviously biased (she must have come in with a heck of an attitude to get that kind of response from any of our bartenders), but this was written so long ago it's lost all relevance. Madame X has renovated and upgraded often over the last ten years. You'd think this website might do the same.

Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
