For local East Village flavour and a really good time, this tavern with a lively street-side patio was the best drinking-place we encountered in NY during Oct 2006. The people we met were all locals - very friendly and interesting characters. The passing scene was exciting but safe. At corner of Ist St and 1st Ave, we highly recommend "One and One" for authenticity and a great time. Sean Fleming and Ted Jenkins, Ottawa Canada.

This bar has a pretty cool set up with a lounge/bar upstairs and a dance floor downstairs. However, it is one of those places that hire morons for bouncers who are there to act like big shots as opposed to keeping order. Apparently me and my friends spent too much time on the stairs figuring out our next move and were promptly told by a bouncer to "Get off my stairs". As we proceeded to move up the stairs, I told the guy it would be nice if the next time he wanted us to something to be a little more polite (and I was actually very polite about it). This guy then proceeds to stomp all the way up "his" stairs and grabbed my friend and hassled us for that. His actions were bordering on unprovoked assault. We obviously left and we aren't ever going back. I can't stand bars were the bouncers are there to bully the customers as opposed to keeping order. And if you ever see a big, African-American bouncer with dreads in that bar Â…watch out...he very sensitive about his stairs.

Food and Drink specials every night and sports all over the place make it a great place to grab a bite and some beers and watch a game. Cool bartenders, but it's weird that there' no girl bartenders..at least I've never seen one. Most places have them in this hood.
