Bacon Cocktails Exist!

By laurator on 6/5/2013

Please Don't Tell, better known as PDT to the regulars, is probably your most quintessential speakeasy on this list. This is the one place where not making a reservation will be almost impossible to get around (unless you come between 5pm-6pm during the week). So make a reservation! To enter, dial the number one on their payphone. Though a clever way to enter, it's still pretty obvious that the payphone serves as the entrance to PDT. This place will offer you one of the best cocktail experiences of your life. As your bartender gets to know you, he may suggest something to you off the menu. By combining two of my favorite things into one of the greatest drinks that is the Bacon-infused Bourbon cocktail ( yea, exactly), PDT now has me on an eternal leash. If you're hungry while on your date, go for their hot dogs. Yup, hot dogs. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty....awesome. http://datemapps.com/

PDT.....Hostess is ruining the experience

By JStugah on 5/4/2011

  • No, I would not go back!

I cant lie, the drinks at PDT are still pretty good and have been over the years..but many MANY city lounges and mixologist spots have amazing drinks and atmospheres. Unfortunately PTD is continually losing its once great allure primarily due to a hostess who thinks she deserves a Royal wedding, and has absolutely no conscious sense of time or people. I am a lover of great cocktails, atmosphere, and people... and if they figure out a better way to run the door, PDT would be a much more enjoyable place to be.

PDT... TREAT YOUR GUESTS WITH RESPECT.

You should treat your guest like guests! I went to PDT this past weekend and the hostess was so unbelievably rude! My party and I were shocked. I brought over a drink from the "other side"/crif dog, and I was not only scolded, but the drink was taken from me like a child.... The hostess put her hand out like was supposed to spit out my gum. I'm in the service business, and no matter if you're having a good day or not...NEVER TREAT YOUR GUESTS LIKE @#$%. Side not.... my drink was delicious and the place would be good if the hostess wasn't rude. Every staff member makes a huge difference...hire some goodies!

Wonderful time!!

This weekend my boyfriend and I met up with a good friend for an evening of food, drinks, and fun. He first called PDT around 6pm but they were already booked. So us 3 wandered around, got a few drinks, and then headed over. My friend popped into the phone booth, chatted with the lady on the other side and then came out. All full but they would call if they got an opening. We grabbed a drink across the street and about 30 min later we got the call. We walked right in and were seated at the bar. The staff were all polite. Not over the top bending over to kiss butt but polite. The bartender was nice, made suggestions and mixed the drinks amazingly. At one point my friend got a bit too animated and knocked his drink over. Right away the bartender cleaned it up and even poured him some more to replace it. Seems like if you're looking for a quiet quirky little place to drink, you'll love it. If you're looking for a typical bar where you can be loud and have the staff fawn over you, this isn't your place.

As a guy that manages bars.....this is righteous

This place is cool. I bet all the bad reviews come from people that are either too drunk to realise that some places that sell alcohol also require some decorum, or don't know how to act in a bar that isn't the size of a football pitch. This is for groups of 4 (max) the cocktails are strong (speakeasy style), the mood is chilled and educative, and there's comfort food if you down your drink too quick. In a place this small, this far away from the tourist hell of Times Square, they wouldn't still be open if they weren't doing something right. A really good place to start your night.

Should be renamed PDG (Please don't go)

I was very excited to go & chose to ignore the poor reviews; however was disappointed like many others. We booked a table for two, arrived on time and was then made to wait outside for 30 minutes after being told it would only be a 5 min wait. After asking (not for the first time) what was going on we were told we could sit in an empty booth (had been empty the whole time!) but would have to move once the table arrived . . . hello, what about the other people moving so we could have our reserved table! There was no apology & the staff really couldn't give a s**t. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME, THE PHONE BOOTH IS FUN BUT THE INSIDE & COCKTAIL LIST REALLY WASN'T THAT SPECIAL.

Age discrimination in my opinion

We had a reservation and the girl called us. We were at the phone booth within 4 minutes but she took one look at me and said "gave your reservation away, too bad". I am just furious because we waited 1 hour for this reservation. I am in my early 40s. Don't bother going to this bar unless you are under 25. We had a baby sitter and everything for the date tonight. I can't tell you how upset I am!

Rude staff undermine the entire concept

Like many, I brought a friend from out of town to experience this bar given it features in every guide book and website when searching for recommendations. We found the phone booth and as I entered excitedly, the door was whisked open by a stoney faced waitress. When I said to her "aw I didn't get to make the call" she looked disparagingly at me, sighed and said "It's really not that big of a deal". REALLY? That's funny because I was under the impression PDT had marketed itself specifically around this and in fact its whole raison d'être is the fun in finding the booth and calling the bar for entry. Needless to say I will never return to this bar on principle. There are dozens of other fantastic bars around like the Simone Martini Bar.

Not sure why all the negative reviews

By HHB on 1/3/2011

  • Yes, I would go back!

I was a little anxious after reading all the negative reviews. I had only been there once before and hadn't had that experience at all, but it was a long time ago, and figured things might have changed. I brought a friend from England here last night, and figured if it was bad, we'd just go somewhere else, no problem. But everything was fine. We actually got in a little early (we had a res), no one was rude, and the bartender was very nice and helpful. My friend is in no way a fashionista hipster, and was treated just as politely as anyone else. The woman at the door was cool and professional, not gushing with instant friendliness, and that's as it should be. I don't need her to be my new best friend, I needed her to do her job, and she did. I'm sure it's not all roses, no place is without its problems, but I think you bring your attitude with you, and get what you give. Come in and expect everyone to kiss your rear end, and you won't get far (that's good New York advice in general); come in and act normal and not like everyone's your darned slave, and you'll be just fine. The drinks were excellent, the food was good, and the service was good. What more do you want? Oh, and yes, the phone booth is fun. :)

Terrible service

By foodie1717 on 10/24/2010

  • No, I would not go back!

This was the worst and most humiliating service I have ever experienced. After waiting for two hours for a seat we were called back only to be told that our seats were taken because we waited another 15 minutes in the line to get back in. The hostess then physically pushed us out by slamming the door into me. We've been there before. The drinks are good but be prepared to spend $100-150 for a party of two. There are much better places on St Marks. Save your patronage for a place that appreciates it.
