I've been going into the Pencil Factory on an irregular basis for years now. Despite the fact that you could mistake your grandmother for a knitted quilt in the general gloom (I'm Irish-it's a cultural lighting thang!) this place has real atmosphere, not least that generated by the long serving bartenders who are personable and friendly to a fault. One of the owners is Irish which (ok i'm prejudiced here...) must contribute to the general friendly vibe going on here. I often go here on my own and, as a woman, i not only don't ever feel uncomfortable, the staff go out of their way to make me feel at home. No crap, this is a genuinely lovely place to just hang out on a leisurely evening. Highly recommended.

Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
