Work in Progress

  • No, I would not go back!

Porch is back and ... better than being closed, I guess. I went in January and don't plan to return. It's a bar trying to be too much. Perhaps Porch was having an identity crisis because winter closed down its revered back porch, and owners compensated by making the small back space leading to the porch a dance floor. (A DJ played what was billed as Turkish music the night I was there. Halfway through the night a friend from Turkey turned to me and said DJs in her home country would never play music that bad.) Of course, the city helped closing Porch's porch too. Signs were taped over the back windows warning that "conditions in these premises are immediately perilous to life." The warnings referred to the bar's exterior, which was overcrowded one recent summer. What you won't find is a warning about the bathrooms. Sure, signs remind you that bathrooms are for one person at a time, but nothing warns you about the poor plumbing. During my visit, somehow the pipes to one of the sinks loosened, so every time you washed your hands the dirty water would leak onto your shoes.
