the only barbershop i've ever been to that was playing the smiths
By olliedog on 12/4/2006
really amazing space. good cut. young barbers and a hot cashier. i heard about this place and was worried it'd be a bit to hip hop, but i was pleasantly suprised to hear the smiths, while i was getting a cut.
Consistency is an issue
By Dio on 6/21/2007
They give a good cut at Frank's, but the pricing is a bit suspect. I've been twice. The first time I received great services including a good cut, razor treatment to the back of the neck, and a polite barber - all for $25. On the second visit, the barber was 30 minutes behind, no razor and it was readily apparent that the barber was in a hurry. The cut was decent, not as good as the first, and at a new price of $35. This level of service consistency isn't appealing or worth $35, in my opinion.
RE: Suspect Pricing
By SirFrank on 7/19/2007
Sir Frank here wanting to clear a few things up. The Chop Shop has several haircut prices and several barbers. A longer hairstyle (all scissor work, crazy texture) will run you 35.00, while a shorter regular cut (some clipper work) will run you 25.00. A plain old buzz or ceaser will come in at 20.00. Although we try to keep everyone on the same page, one barber may not know what another barber charged you on a previous visit. This can be cleared up simply by bringing the price difference to your barber or the cashier's attention. We apologize for any misunderstandings.
A funky joint in the LES

Had a cut and a shave for $45 w/ Fritz. He gave me a great cut and a decent shave... a few knicks though and my 1.5 days growth had him sweating. Great environment and unpretencious...I'll go back.
great cut, great barber

I went in today with pretty long messy hair and came out with a tight whole new look. I also got a little clipper dseign. In the end it came out to a reasonable $28. The head barber Mr.Bee was a nice guy and he did a great job cutting my hair. The place is more than i had expected. I definitely plan to visit again once my hair grows back.
don't expect a bargain

I've gone their twice, and I had a better experience the first time and I'll be requesting Fritz' services in the future [better the devil you know, then the devil you don't know]. I have considerably short hair by today's standards, and have only requested "refined/clean cut" looks, but have inevitably been charged for a Premium Scissor Cut, about $40 not including tip. So don't expect the $25 rate unless perhaps you explicitly order a numerical razer setting. And insist they shave the back of your neck, because they may forget and their next appointment will arrive. Asides from that, these barbers are in fact highly skilled and take their time. I used to go to Astor before, which was very satisfactory for short haircuts, but these guys are superior at the details, and thats what makes the difference. A few weeks after an Astor cut its already time for a shape up, but these guy's cuts seem to grow and develop much cleaner.
A great cut
By gatordave on 5/10/2008
Let me start by saying I am pretty particular and inevitably hate every haircut I get, so I usually do my own up-keep. But I heard great things and felt particularly trustworthy, so I tried this place out. The cut was good, kind of like one of my old tight Dominican/Black barber shop fades, but with a upscale salon feel. It's really the best I've felt immediately after a cut in a while despite years of barber shop-hopping. I will definitely go back. The only negatives were that when I made my appointment I didn't specifically say I wanted a shave, so I showed up a with decent growth only to find out he wouldn't shave me as it wasn't part of my appointment. That was disappointing, but no biggie. Also, I won't complain about the price because, hey, its NYC. However, those who have short hair might not think $28+ is a good price for a 20 minute haircut. But for me it was worth it because I really felt like he paid attention to detail. Overall an exceptional cut.

Amazing cut. A few of my friends go to the chop shop regularly so I tried it out. I got a cut from Gogy the youngest kid in there and was a little hesitant at first. But his work was great, detailed, and just what i asked for. I also got the cleanest shave I've ever had and the hot towels smelled great- minty tea tree. Definitely going back in a few weeks. Thanks Gogy!
Solid haircut for the price

I just moved back to NYC and I was searching for a new place to get my haircut. I read the reviews on Franks and decided to give it a shot. At first, I was a little hesitant and afraid it was just a fade shop ( I have spikey hair). But after I sat down with Ivan, I knew I was in great hands. He listened to exactly what I asked for and followed it to a t. For $38, it's worth a shot. All the barbers/stylists seem pretty talented there and they even gave me a free goodie bag for my first time. I'm definitely going back.
My regular barber moved there from Astor Place

Good atmosphere, nice environment. Go to Dwayne, he will hook you up.
