These guys are much more reliable than many other barbers around the city. And lightyears better than most of those unskilled Chinatown barbers. However, I've tried a well-known highly recommended barber here who also kept telling me how popular he was. But frankly he isn't as good as my old fashion humble barber in Pittsburgh (Garvis in Oakland). It's just another indication to me that NYC is all about the marketing. However, they do a decent job so I will continue to go to them.
Great Consistent Hair Cuts By Jose
By Kyleob on 6/30/2005
I have been going to Astor Place for about 4 years, now, and to Jose for about 2 years. I used to just go to Astor without requesting any specific stylist, until one time they led me to Jose. He listened to what I wanted, and performed exactly what I had in mind. Jose gives a great hair cut, and I will never go to anyone else.

Jose is the best hairstylist in the place. I travel from Wall Street to go to him. I would travel farther if I had to. He is great! -Ken
Astor and Jose
By brooklyn1001 on 9/5/2005
I must agree with all the praise for Jose. He is the best. A great guy and great with hair. He's been cutting mine for more than 15 years, adapting his work as my needs have changed over time. In fact, I lived in Washington for several years, but I never once had my hair cut there! I would always get it done back at Astor in Jose's chair, dropping by during visits back to New York. He provides the kind of skill and service that inspires that kind of loyalty.

Cheap, upbeat, but very pushy
By yelizaveta on 4/17/2008
I decided to go to Astor Place because it was so cheap and because the haircut I was looking for seemed extremely easy to do - I was going from hair down my back to just past shoulder length. I was assigned to Suze, and although she was very personable and sweet, she was very very pushy (she wanted to dye my hair, when I definitely didn't want this done). My only restriction was that I wanted to keep some length to my hair. In the end, she cut my hair about 4-5 inches shorter than I asked for - it ended up being a mid-neck bob. The cut wasn't bad, and could have been cute if this was what I had asked for. I would advise those with specific ideas of what hairstyle they want to go elsewhere. For those who want someone else to take control and experiment, this may be the place for you.
Jose is NYC's best kept secret
By instyle4less on 5/6/2008
Jose has been cutting my hair for over 4 years now. He always pays great attention to detail and never rushes through a haircut - even when he has people waiting. He cuts your hair EXACTLY as you ask and offers suggestions rather than just cutting it how he wants. He is also an expert colorist and his prices are incredible compared to top salons. Many a beautiful woman has gotten out of his chair ahead of me in line. Jose is also friendly to talk to. Great energy. Tops all the way.
Another one for Jose

I recently moved from FL and was looking for a place to get a good haircut. Read the reviews and decided to give Jose a shot. I can say that everyone was right on the dot. He's friendly, courteous, gave me exactly what I asked for and was in and out in about 20 minutes (did make an appointment though). Definitely recommended!
