I am a dancer, sculptor and equestrian. In training horses, the goal is to help them move from their backs, which is what produces their beautiful, express floating movement. One day, it occurred to me that the same must be true for people so I went on a search to find out if my idea were true. It turns out that it is in fact profoundly true. This search lead me to Tim Driscoll of Backbone and Wingspan. I found in Tim a teacher with a deep and wide knowledge not only of movement and structure, but of geometry, poetry, philosophy. The experience of working with Tim is enlightening on many levels. Tim is coaching me to reorganized my body away from being only frontally focused. The power of our structure comes from the back body. Who knew? In a way, the change is easy because the body wants to function easily. The movements that Tim uses to guide are small and produce no strain in the muscles or joints. These changes are in placement of the skeleton within the joints and within the open space in the body. Working with Tim, has had a ripple effect in my world. My riding students speak a more quiet and efficient "body language" with their horses and the horses respond by being much more curious and attentive to the riders. It's amazing to witness the delicate dialogue between to species. The effect on me is that I move lightly; I stand tall with ease; and feel free in my body.

Tim thoroughly explained and showed me how I could support my back and protect my groin region by altering my existing exercises of Bridge and Sphinx. He showed me an alignment meditation/visualization that uses gravity and intention that not only helps my sciatic nerve get more room, but was just the ticket for my 90 year old Dad who suffers from sciatic pain and "uneven legs." A second session several weeks later added more information and sensory memory to include my outer hamstring in supporting myself while walking and how to use my heel and arch to maximize their effectiveness. I highly recommend Tim for his concern that you understand your body's support system, and his taking time to have you learn sense memory as an aid to doing the exercises at home. I saw Tim at Space in Bedford Hills which has several people working in the same large room. As only one other therapist was there with one patient the distraction was minimal. It is very light, welcoming and clean, and friendly.

Working with Tim, I gained a deeper understanding of my own body and its role in the universe, so to speak. The principles that Tim shared with me have helped me stand taller, walk lighter and feel stronger than I ever have before. Tim's use of imagary helps you to understand the underlying principles of movement and it helps you connect the visual with the sensory in your session. He is an excellent teacher!

To experience Karen's work is to know the joy of moving freely without pain. Her training as a dancer, physical therapist and Feldenkrais practitioner -- and her innate understanding -- meld to guide me, and encourage me in my efforts to heal. We work together, exploring the impulses of body and brain that initiate movement. We find new pathways free of tension and wasted effort. It's exciting, strengthening, fulfilling -- a complete healing experience.

I started seeing Cathy in the 4th month of my twin pregnancy. Cathy has such a wonderful, calm way of working and it was always such a treat to step into the studio after a day at work. Her knowledge and love of what she is does makes the experience all the more enjoyable... she gives you a great work-out and you never know how hard you are working. Her guidance undoubtably helped me through an excellent pregnancy and easy delivery and recovery, and my post-natal sessions (and beyond)were an easy transition back to normal fitness. I could not recommend her more, pregnant or not... great facilities and a friendly, knowledgable team at B & W.

Karen is gifted. From the tips of my toes to the top of my head a hands on Feldenkrais treatment with her is better than any massage or chiropractic treatment I have ever had. Her background as a dancer, athlete and physical therapist enhance her abilities to help me understand and improve my physicality. Within one minute at my first treatment she was able to see where I needed help. Her kind and comforting ministrations coupled with specific mind/body exercises have helped me ENORMOUSLY. I am an old lady who wants to stay ”on her toes.” Thank you, Karen, for helping me help myself!

It's difficult to explain exactly why Backbone and Wingspan is so magical, it's likely a combination of the light, open loft space, the non-judgmental and relaxed vibe of the instructors, and the ebullience and sense of humor that emanates from Tim (the owner). As a sufferer of lower backpain and tension in my shoulders, Tim's use of creative visualization and hands-on instruction has been a god send. Not only do I no longer have pain in my lower back, but people now regularly comment on my great posture. Additionally, Tim has improved my awareness of the mind-body connection in a way that has transformed not only my sense of movement but also my sense of self.

Long and lean and trim and lanky that girl from Backbone and Wingspan so lovely and when she passes the big fat asses go urghhhhh. Oh how I want it so badly. Oh how I want it so madly, but when I go to the gym, I end up with short stocky limbs. Former Fat Ass and Current Student of Backbone and Wingspan.

I have been working with Tim, the owner of Backbone and Wingspan, for over a year now. I started because I was getting married and wanted to tone my arms and back before the wedding, it is now ten months later and I am still going. I love it, my arms are toned, my posture is better and while I notice an obvious difference in the way I look, the way I feel has been the biggest difference. I don’t have constant pain in my neck and shoulders anymore since Tim has shown me how to work out these muscles properly. He spends a lot of time making sure you are using your muscles correctly so you get the most out of each exercise. He is such a knowledgeable and patient teacher and I would recommend his studio to anyone that wants to look and feel better.

I'm a ballroom dancer and my dancing has improved significantly while I've worked with Cathy. Gyrotonic is THE best method I've found to release my upper back and shoulders and increase my range of motion while building a strong core. I've also been able to develop more fluidity in my hips and more strength in my legs. I highly recommend the experience to anyone looking to work on strength and body awareness and/or to learn to avoid injury.
