Tim's use of imagery in his description of movement has helped me reach muscles in my back I have never felt before. He has articulated my posture, and made it more natural. I leave feeling taller, more confident and smarter for the knowledge of my own anatomy he imparts. I also took a Gyrotonic lesson from Cathy, who showed me that letting my body make the natural movements similar to modern dance could help me to sculpt long, lean muscles as well as be more graceful.

For years I wondered why pilates and yoga classes were not producing the kind of results I expected. After working with Tim Driscoll at Backbone and Wingspan I began to understand why. Tim's approach targets those hard to tone underused muscle groups creating length and strength. Tim's lessons on how to avoid using those overworked muscle groups and to use the support offered by our bones and joints span far beyond his immaculate and peaceful studio. I've taken Tim's lessons and applied them to class work and even in simply walking or running and have seen incredible results. Tim has a special gift and working with him is a total pleasure.

I have been working with Luciana for about two years now. Her keen ability to observe how I am performing an exercise has truly revolutionized the way I use my body and how I feel about myself. With her help I have become both stronger and more flexible, I never have a stiff neck anymore and my core is much stronger and leaner. Our work together has contributed greatly to my overall well being. Everybody in the studio is kind and encouraging, the space feels like an oasis of peace as soon as you enter it. It is hard to put into words what this work has done for me, so all I can say is: Try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed!

Rarely have I had such a meaningful experience doing bodywork. From the beginning I was struck by the sense that the instructor was right there with me, sensitive to the experience I was having inside my own body. I have been so impressed with the depth and subtlety of the work I have done with Luciana, Tim and Cathy at Backbone and Wingspan that I think it has spoiled me and I couldn't go anywhere else! I highly recommend this studio to anyone who is looking for a very sophisticated and highly intelligent approach to bodywork.

After months of Dr. visits, anti inflammatories, physical therapy and cortisone injections, I was frustrated and still in pain. I took some familial advice and tried pilates. (don't you hate it when Mom is still right?!) Working with Tim was a truly wonderful experience. For the first time in months my pain was diminishing. Tim's vivid descriptions of physiological movement and anatomy along with his imperturbable patience allowed me to tap into my body and through strengthening hard to access areas helped to relieve my lower back pain. I spend about 10 hours a day in front of a computer and following Tim's advice and suggestions make an immediate difference in my comfort at work. Working with Tim was an absolute joy. His attitude is almost shockingly positive - after all, this is NYC! His buoyant personality made for an delightful experience. Strengthening hard to tone areas while having a "delightful experience"??? If you spend your day chained to your desk or literally carry your stress on your shoulders, I highly recommend seeing Tim at Backbone and Wingspan.

I'm a ballroom dancer and my dancing has improved significantly while I've worked with Cathy. Gyrotonic is THE best method I've found to release my upper back and shoulders and increase my range of motion while building a strong core. I've also been able to develop more fluidity in my hips and more strength in my legs. I highly recommend the experience to anyone looking to work on strength and body awareness and/or to learn to avoid injury.

I have been working with Tim, the owner of Backbone and Wingspan, for over a year now. I started because I was getting married and wanted to tone my arms and back before the wedding, it is now ten months later and I am still going. I love it, my arms are toned, my posture is better and while I notice an obvious difference in the way I look, the way I feel has been the biggest difference. I donÃ‚Â’t have constant pain in my neck and shoulders anymore since Tim has shown me how to work out these muscles properly. He spends a lot of time making sure you are using your muscles correctly so you get the most out of each exercise. He is such a knowledgeable and patient teacher and I would recommend his studio to anyone that wants to look and feel better.

Long and lean and trim and lanky that girl from Backbone and Wingspan so lovely and when she passes the big fat asses go urghhhhh. Oh how I want it so badly. Oh how I want it so madly, but when I go to the gym, I end up with short stocky limbs. Former Fat Ass and Current Student of Backbone and Wingspan.

It's difficult to explain exactly why Backbone and Wingspan is so magical, it's likely a combination of the light, open loft space, the non-judgmental and relaxed vibe of the instructors, and the ebullience and sense of humor that emanates from Tim (the owner). As a sufferer of lower backpain and tension in my shoulders, Tim's use of creative visualization and hands-on instruction has been a god send. Not only do I no longer have pain in my lower back, but people now regularly comment on my great posture. Additionally, Tim has improved my awareness of the mind-body connection in a way that has transformed not only my sense of movement but also my sense of self.

Karen is gifted. From the tips of my toes to the top of my head a hands on Feldenkrais treatment with her is better than any massage or chiropractic treatment I have ever had. Her background as a dancer, athlete and physical therapist enhance her abilities to help me understand and improve my physicality. Within one minute at my first treatment she was able to see where I needed help. Her kind and comforting ministrations coupled with specific mind/body exercises have helped me ENORMOUSLY. I am an old lady who wants to stay Â”on her toes.Â” Thank you, Karen, for helping me help myself!
