I decided to try this place out because of the relatively good reviews NYMag gave it. I explained to the stylist that I wanted to keep the length and just shorten the layers a little bit. By the time I came out, my hair was over three inches shorter and was blow-dryed stick-straight (I have permed wavy hair). It looked okay styled like that, but after I washed it and let it dry in its curly state, I looked like a nightmare. The bottom layers are straight. The top layers are incredibly short and shaggy. I went to another salon to see if I could get it re-permed to get rid of this problem, but the stylist there said I would have to let it grow out for at least a month because of the uneven short layers. I think the stylists at Hayato are used to cutting stick-straight hair, so do NOT go here unless you have straight hair. Also, I was really creeped out by the girl who washed my hair because she had cuts or pricks all over her wrists. It's scary when that's rubbing all over your head.

I have been going to Hayato about twice yearly since 2004. I went for the 'straightening' on a recommendation of a friend who can afford what she wants but commutes in from Ct. Happily for me it's about a half mile walk. I've had several different stylists and thought they were all good. I have always enjoyed the staff, professionalism, and (I'm only remarking on tihs because of the prior review) love the shampoo as it includes a bit of a scalp massage. My only complaint is that they are so successful they are often booked months in advance. I graded them 8 vs. 10 not because I felt I was missing anything, but rather because I expect an expensive salon would probably have those over the top amenities to be rated 'excellent' in atmosphere and service.
