A truly hair-changing experience...
By DustWorld on 4/6/2011
I went to the John Barrett salon for the first time about a year ago. A friend told me how wonderful it was, and that I had to check it out. I met Mr. Barrett, a LOVELY man, and his team completely transformed my hair all in ONE day. I had a Keratin treatment done there, that lasts for 16 weeks at a time and completely took the frizz out of my hair. I also had my hair colored by William Howe, a genius colorist, and then, a hair cut that was wonderful and lasted for months. I am now a John Barrett junky! I LOVE the salon...I love him and his staff and how they care for their clients. They really work to fit each persons specific hair needs. I have NEVER had as many compliments on my hair as I consistently do, now that I work with them. I will never go ANYWHERE else. Run, don't walk...they will change your life, too.
John is an artist w/ an amazing sense of humor
By jenecreason on 4/3/2011
For quite some time now I've gone to John for haircuts (long hair, ~$500) and William for color (dark red, single process, ~$150). I always get comments on how amazing my hair looks, even when I haven't done anything to it. I also attend 5-6 shows during Fashion Week every season and Sandra does my make-up. She's amazing and used to do runway shows herself. Beyonce gets her eyelash extensions at John Barrett. Anything that can be ordred at any of Bergdorf's restaurants and cafes can be ordered in the Salon. I usually order the fruit salad and a latte while my color is processing. John Barrett is always a pleasure. Everyone has a great sense of humor, especially John. Other reviewers have stated that the employees have a bad attitude. I've had the opposite experience. I won my first haircut w/ John in a charity auction a few years ago and haven't gone anywhere else since. I swear by this place.
John Barrett Salon
By Soy on 5/18/2008
After years of using 2nd rate salons, I decided why not give the infamous John Barrett Salon a try and see if it can live up to all the hype. I'm happy to say that $600+ for color and a cut was actually well worth it. I was ready for a stuck up staff of rude wanna be's but I am more than happy to say that EVERYONE was wonderful. I had color from George and a cut from Janet and they were the most down to earth exceptional people who actually listened and helped. It's an investment but the experience was amazing and my hair is (for once) great...plus the view is exceptional!

I just got the works done at The John Barrett Salon (relaxer, cut, eyebrow shaping, manicure, pedicure, and makeup application). While it was pricey, it had to be my best experience ever at a salon!! the staff was so attentive from the start, offering coffee and magazines, and they guided me to each specialist every step of the way. I have definitely recommended this salon to all my friends and if you are looking for a fabulous 'do and exemplary service, please visit the John Barrett Salon!!!!!
Bergdorf Blondes really do look best!
By NYCgal7 on 3/31/2008
I just had my hair cut and colored at the John Barrett Salon. I had the most amazing experience - not only does my hair look gorgeous but they really treat you like royalty - they will do your nails while you wait for your color to set and order you lunch from one of the yummy BG restaurants. Tip - if you want to go when the Salon is a but quieter Sundays are perfect.
Theo at John Barrett Salon is the best
By bevomel on 11/29/2004
Theo is a fantastic stylist. I have gone to him for about a year now and have never been disappointed in his cuts. He is consistently wonderful. I was due for highlights and wanted a cut at the same time, but Theo was out of town. So, I just got my highlights done and waited until next time for the cut. I went a full 3 months between cuts and my hair still looked great! A sign of a truly talented stylist is a cut that grows out so well.
I agree wth the comments regarding the bad attitude

Julia is the only person that keeps me going back to John Barrett-she is an artist with brows, and actually makes my puny ones look thicker. (Irina is great as well, I see her when Julia is not available) I have tried others at the salon without much success. Their haircuts really don't measure up with other salon's, even less pricey ones. I obviously can't comment on every stylist-after all, every place has its hits and misses, but the staff really does embody the worst of upper east snobbishness, and what cracks me up about all that attitude, is that at the end of the day they're schlepping home to the same NYC apartment like the rest of us. Is there really a need for the farce? I guess it makes the ladies who lunch feel at home.
Smoke and mirrors
By Angela1234 on 9/7/2013
Don't be fooled by the smoke and mirrors, the amazing sales pitches. The colorists are amazing at marketing themselves and saying all the right things. I'd rather someone who is actually great at hair color and not all talk. I'm going back to Carlina Ortega. I'm going to her new salon.
NOT worth your time or money!
By Sunshine325 on 8/12/2010
I've never written a review like this but just had to today. I wanted to treat myself to a pedicure in a "big girl" salon rather than my neighborhood nail place. Guess what! My neighborhood nail place is SO much better, not to mention SO much quicker, friendlier, better massage (as there was none with this one) and much much less expensive. $100 later and an hour later my pedicure was over and there was no place to sit and wait a few minutes to dry other than the most uncomfortable area at the reception desk/elevator area where you feel totally unwelcome and in the way.

I had a really bad experience getting highlights. I wanted something subtle and I ended up with bright yellow streaks (I have dark brown hair). I came back the next day to have it fixed, specifically requested that I did not want red highlights, and I ended up with bright orange-copper highlights. Its the most unnatural bright color I have ever seen. The worst part is the colorist never checked to see what the color looked like after it had processed. I called to speak to a manager, and I never got a response. For claiming to be one of the best salons in New York they definately SHOULD HAVE HIGHER STANDARDS.
