Good Haircut, Very Expensive, Obnoxious Attitude

I've been going to Salon Ishi for many years. Ishi gives a great haircut. However, there are two serious complaints - the outrageous cost for a haircut and Ishi's attitude. He charges well over $200 for a basic trim. Plus, he only spends 30 minutes with each client. And he often has one of his "assistants" blow out my hair. Ishi is also obnoxious and inflexible. He acts like he is superiour to everyone else and is not very accomodating around scheduling. On a brighter note, Eli is fantastic with blonde highlights. He is upbeat and listens to his clients. His mentor, Idalia, is another story. Don't go to her! She used toner on me when I specifically asked her not to and my hair turned yellow, not the ash blonde that hightlights are supposed to look like. When I complained, she kept saying that it would look better when I got home. Needless to say, I had to go back to get it fixed. I went to Eli. I'd go to Eli over Idalia any day.

Hair Straightening poorly done and causes damage

The first couple of times I went to Salon Ishi to get my hair straightened ("stick straight" Japanese method), they did a great job - I was reasonably happy despite the $700 cost. The last time, however, there were several sections of my hair that remained wavy and I had significant breakage around my hairline. When I went back to see if they could fix it, I was told it happened because I had colored my hair. I use a 6-week-temporary color which I had also been using the first few times I went to Ishi as well. I have been using this same color on my hair for 3-4 years consistently to cover a few grey hairs and to brighten my hair and know for a fact the color was in my hair every time I got it straightened, including when I had a strand test and had had no problems. Besides, I had specifically told them I had colored my hair each time I went! Now I have to contend with growing out lots of short pieces of hair which looks awful and not have the benefit of completely straight hair which I had paid $700 for!

I think the haircut I had here was just okay. I found the manager working here to be annoying and too much in your business. I would look elsewhere for a decent cut in a relaxing environment.

I went for a consultation about having a perm. I was very clear about wanting a perm with large, loose curls to give body, lift and movement to my straight hair. Instead, I was given a weird vertical 'tousle' (ala meg ryan) that looked absolutely NOTHING like any of the pictures I provided. Instead, it looked like one of those crinkly-haired dogs. Won't be wasting another 200 bucks for hair that I now have to spend a year or more growing out.

I went in for a shiatsu shampooing/stress reliever...and i loved it!! i can't wait to go back. Talk about being relaxed. I then had a blow out, and let me tell you that my hair has never felt better...I feel like those girls in the panteen comercials. I have never gotten so many compliments.

For haircuts, I would recommend seeing stylists who charge $120 and up. Once you pay $120 for an excellent haircut, you won't need to get one for another 6 months.

Ishi is the end of a long road of searching for the perfect stylist: an artist who has the eye, the technique to make people look their BEST. When he does your hair and you walk out the door, be prepared to then get asked out, hired, favorably reviewed (all experiences I and my friend who recommended him to me) have had)! Even better, I took my 70 yr mom who colors her own hair and hasn't paid more than $12 for a cut in her life. Ishi was first and foremost very kind to her (no NYC attitude, no condenscending BS), and then in 30 minutes proceded to make her 40 years younger! My jaw is still on floor. Sensational cut, style (and grew out great). Oh yes - he learned we were going to a wedding the next day. He had her come back, then did a blowout/style the next day for FREE just so she would look her best. Gotta recommend Koji for make up. The combo is unbeatable. While this is a pricey cut, it is worth every penny. If you want mediocrity, sure, its cheaper, but then why are you reading this?

The 2002 winner for "BEST MEN'S HAIRCUT" by Chantal Gouy, comfortably done in the beautiful atmosphere of the "Salon Ishi" has my renomination for 2003. As long as Chantal is still styling, and NY MAGAZINE is still looking for BEST OF, she is the one that you are looking for. I personally have followed Chantal since 1988. As spoken in 2002, "She seems to focus on every hair," cannot describe her any better. No one else can look at your feature's as she and make you as handsome as can be. "From CEOs to rock stars" as said in 2002, to the everyday guy, this is the place to be. You'll feel great about yourself everyday. Trust me, you'll hear it from everyone you know. 70 East 55th Street 212-888-4744

went for a $68 deep conditioning treatment. It was heavenly - hair is in the best condition it's been in for years. I'm still getting compliments on it. Had the stylist blow dry my hair because it was freezing cold outside. The resulting bill froze me in my tracks! Ask the cost before saying yes!
