best hair cut in my life

I had the good fortune of randomly finding Salon Ishi while in the city and in need of a men's haircut. Everything about my experience was exceptional, from the front desk, the very attentive staff, and I was fortunate enough to have Ishi himself cut my hair. Though more than I normally pay it was the best hair cut I've ever had.

I've been having my hair done at Ishi's for over 18 years, I love it everytime! I had my hair cut with Ishi his wife and Victor.. It's always terrific! I would venture to other salons (because I live in NJ) and I've so disappointed. I keep coming back.

Consistently Terrific

A friend recommended Salon Ishi to me over 15 years ago and after my first cut by Ishi, I was hooked. Occasionally, I would venture to another 'top salon' by buying a cut through a charity event, but I always returned. Why! Because no matter where I go, everyone always tells me that my hair looks great and wants to know who cut it. Most of the time, I just flip my head over and blow it out with a hair dryer. Bottom line - it's looked great for over 15 years regardless of the season.

You've had work done?

Want to feel exquisitely female again? Want to get your mojo on? Make an appointment, Salon Ishi. The old friend said, "You've had work done? You look......wonderful." These were his words after my haircut, midtown, at Salon Ishi. Who cares if I looked 15 years younger, more important, I FELT 25 years younger, and like a cat, a cat thoroughly petted, after having my hair cut by Ishi. I had forgotten what it felt like to have my hair taken over by a master hair stylist. No Botox, no surgery or lift, just my hair cut by Ishi, perfect. The Fountain of Youth a myth, but, not Urban Legend, the truth, a chance at beauty: Salon Ishi, hair expertly, masterfully cut and styled. Thank you, Ishi.

Beware

  • No, I would not go back!

Last April, Ishi "accidentally" charged me twice for a $700+ service. After reviewing my credit card statement, I called the salon, but was offered no apology. This month, I called to schedule a haircut; I had just returned from a trip overseas and was unable to schedule a cut with my favorite salon. I figured I would give it another chance. Ishi himself then accused me of not paying for my last service. To be safe, I called my credit card company, which ensured me that the payment had been received. Given that Ishi had not mentioned anything about an outstanding payment until then, after nine months had passed, I canceled my appointment, too wary of the salon's business practices to ever go back.

Good Haircut, Very Expensive, Obnoxious Attitude

  • Yes, I would go back!

I've been going to Salon Ishi for many years. Ishi gives a great haircut. However, there are two serious complaints - the outrageous cost for a haircut and Ishi's attitude. He charges well over $200 for a basic trim. Plus, he only spends 30 minutes with each client. And he often has one of his "assistants" blow out my hair. Ishi is also obnoxious and inflexible. He acts like he is superiour to everyone else and is not very accomodating around scheduling. On a brighter note, Eli is fantastic with blonde highlights. He is upbeat and listens to his clients. His mentor, Idalia, is another story. Don't go to her! She used toner on me when I specifically asked her not to and my hair turned yellow, not the ash blonde that hightlights are supposed to look like. When I complained, she kept saying that it would look better when I got home. Needless to say, I had to go back to get it fixed. I went to Eli. I'd go to Eli over Idalia any day.

Hair Straightening poorly done and causes damage

By Vita on 1/26/2006

  • No, I would not go back!

The first couple of times I went to Salon Ishi to get my hair straightened ("stick straight" Japanese method), they did a great job - I was reasonably happy despite the $700 cost. The last time, however, there were several sections of my hair that remained wavy and I had significant breakage around my hairline. When I went back to see if they could fix it, I was told it happened because I had colored my hair. I use a 6-week-temporary color which I had also been using the first few times I went to Ishi as well. I have been using this same color on my hair for 3-4 years consistently to cover a few grey hairs and to brighten my hair and know for a fact the color was in my hair every time I got it straightened, including when I had a strand test and had had no problems. Besides, I had specifically told them I had colored my hair each time I went! Now I have to contend with growing out lots of short pieces of hair which looks awful and not have the benefit of completely straight hair which I had paid $700 for!

Obnoxious and cloying manager

I think the haircut I had here was just okay. I found the manager working here to be annoying and too much in your business. I would look elsewhere for a decent cut in a relaxing environment.

Terrible Perm

By patron on 9/9/2005

  • No, I would not go back!

I went for a consultation about having a perm. I was very clear about wanting a perm with large, loose curls to give body, lift and movement to my straight hair. Instead, I was given a weird vertical 'tousle' (ala meg ryan) that looked absolutely NOTHING like any of the pictures I provided. Instead, it looked like one of those crinkly-haired dogs. Won't be wasting another 200 bucks for hair that I now have to spend a year or more growing out.
