Dissapointed

I visited this spa when it was Cornelia and it was superb! I loved it so much I couldn't wait to go back. I recently went for a massage and facial and I can not tell you how disappointed I was. From the beginning things were bad. The woman who booked my reservation did not know what she was doing. It took almost 30 minutes. The massage and facial were totally overpriced for what they offered. The massage was very mediocre and the woman who did my facial just wanted to sell me products. It was underwhelming. I had such high hopes for this spa and not only did they not live up to them they left me more stressed than when I arrived. Needless to say I will not be back. I am a spa enthusiast and don't mind spending money when its worth it but please save your money and go elsewhere. I must not be the only one who thinks this place has gone downhill because the spa was empty when I was there on a weekend.

BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

I am a regular customer of this spa since it was Cornelia and i was thrilled that i finally found the BEST spa for me. Their atmosphere and therapists are amazing and the overall rate should be over the top. But things were changed when i visited there a couple of weeks ago. 2 things: tip free policy and the rate increment. tip free policy may sound tempting at first, but if think twice, the policy doesn't give you the real benefit back to you at all, because customers are served by therapists not by the company. I feel the company who owns chakra try to take more money out of their customers by increasing their rate and disguise their taking with "tip free" policy which ends up taking therapists effort money out of their pockets..not cool, huh?

Found My Spa

I am a major spa-aholic and am very picky. My favorite spas are upscale but comfortable and my favorite therapists are technically adept but also intuitive enough to read my "signs" -- too much pressure, too little pressure, less talking, more talking, no product pushing. For me, Spa Chakra hit all the right notes -- luxurious, calm, warm, friendly and soothing. Even though I rushed in late for the last appointment of the day, the staff -- who I'm sure secretly could not wait to get home -- could not have been kinder or more accomodating. My facialist had an incredibly light touch and my massage was among the best I've had in New York City. So far my favorite day spa experience.

GREAT EXPERIENCE

I thought the check in process was lovely - the staff was friendly and appropriate and the spa was immaculate ... the relaxation room was clean and the food was delicious. I thought that the masseuse gave me one of the BEST massages that I have ever had. She is really terrific. Great TREATMENT - very relaxing . It was truly a pleasure. The spa looked totally beautiful - spotless - immaculate and the apple cider in the women's locker room was a really nice touch and delicious. It was a TERRIFIC experience and may be one of the best that I have ever had at a spa.

Go to Mandarin or Peninsula instead

I went back recently to find the new owners (I believe Mr. Canizales is the CEO/owner per Spa Chakra website) raised the prices and decreased the offerings in the services. It was not nearly as inviting and not even close to being busy. I think people talk and when you are paying this much for service, you would hope you leave 110% satisfied. Also, the staff was heard in the locker room bashing the new owners about not being paid on time and having their insurance cancelled unannounced. It was so disheartening to hear. These women work hard and I would never go back just from that alone. Go somewhere where you will have an amazing experience, like the Mandarin, Great Jones Spa or the Peninsula.

I received a gift certificate from my husdband but after reading the review from SamanthaR I was hesitant in trying it out. Lets just say i was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure about the "one person" comment from Samantha but the place was packed. The reason I rated it low in selection was that they could not fit me in to get my hair done after my treatment. I had a facial and massage and the therapist (I think her name was Luma) was amazing. I'm going back in two weeks for my nails so I'll keep you posted.

Oasis in the concrete jungle

When my cab dropped me off in front of the spa on 5th, it was hard for me to imagine that I could feel relaxed in the midst of all the hustle and bustle going on. But once the elevator doors opened I was transported to a world of luxury and relaxation that I didn't think I'd ever want to leave from. I honestly was skeptical as I'd heard it was under new ownership but those worries quickly faded. I went for hair services at the salon but wound up having my make up done as well. I plan on returning to enjoy a massage and perhaps facial as well, and I highly recommend anyone looking for an escape from the craziness of the city to come to the wonderful oasis that is Spa Chakra on 5th. (They also had a wonderful rooftop cafe that had gorgeous views of the city.) -H.K.

Is this place going out of business?

  • No, I would not go back!

I visited this spa when it was named Cornelia Day Resort and loved it. Having had such a terrific experience then, I recently decided to return. It was a bad sign when the young woman on phone had great difficulty booking my appointments (a sixty minute massage followed by a pedicure). It took fifteen minutes and being placed on hold several times to get everything sorted out. While in the spa, I only saw one other customer the entire time I was there. My massage was so terrible that I could not resist asking the therapist how long she had been in the field. She told me that had just finished massage school and started the week before. My pedicure was good, but not worth the $75 they charged. The strangest part of my experience was how the woman doing my pedicure seemed to be very upset, so I asked her if everything was ok. From what I gathered of her broken English, she was stressed out because her last two paychecks had bounced. Is that even legal? Like others apparently caught on before I did, I discovered that this beautiful facility has seriously gone downhill.
