Once You Go Black...

Part sci-fi thriller/ part political allegory, District 9 is an thought-provoking look at a world coming to terms with racial intolerance in the form of an alien invasion. Told in mockamentary style, which tends to distance the audience and downplay the emotional impact of the story, the film works as an action thriller while subversively exposing the African apartheid system rooted so prevalently in the history of South Africa (during the sixties to the mid-nineties) and the ongoing discrimination that still exists to any minority in our world today (shades of recent immigration hatred surfacing in our own country). As in most sci-fi thrillers, District 9 targets the familiar villainous stereotypes: governmental cover-ups and big business greed as the primary enemy in its plot structure, and the gullibility of the masses to readily accept the force-fed falsities that are today's news reports (shades of Fox News). Vividly directed by Neill Blomkamp and showing a great visual style throughout his film, District 9 is an effective moviegoing experience from a talented filmmaker, whom I am sure, will be making a sequel in the near future...District 10, anyone? GRADE: B
