Flight was a fun film to watch highlighted by great acting by Denzel Washington and an interesting, unusual, paradoxical story. But what was the film really about? To me it was about retribution. "The act of God" plane crash was about bringing to an end the now out of control alcoholism of Whip Whitaker. Drink your way to a divorce, a lost relationship with your only child, a self destructive relationship with a co-worker,and an everyday empty, sad life but wantonly display total disregard for the lives of others by drinking alcohol when you're drunk AND on the job piloting a plane...then you have crossed the proverbial line drawn in the sand. Enough is enough. This must come to an end. And the film shows Whitaker going through this retribution process and the destructive self deception, lies and intense pain and suffering his addiction of alcoholism has caused him and the people he knew and cared for. At the films end he has confronted his alcoholism. Though now jailed, disgraced, and without a career- unable to do again what he so loved to do, pilot an airplane he was free of his addiction and could begin to build a loving relationship with his estranged son and perhaps his former wife.
