Up, Up, and Away!

By dearmoviegoer on 8/28/2009

  • Overall Rating: 10

The new Disney/Pixar collaboration, Up, is a charming and delightful tale about a lonely old man, a Mr. Carl Fredericksen by name and his 8 year-old companion-in-training, Russell, a Boy Scout wanting to earn his Senior Merit Badge. Their paths cross, an adventure ensues, and a beautiful relationship emerges in this well written and perfectly rendered 3-D film experience. Up has so many thrilling images to behold on their journey to Paradise Falls! (Some that quickly come to mind: the colorful glows from the helium-inflated balloons as they past through the city and the reactions from the people below; the changing of neckties to symbolize passing years; a house in motion sailing into a thunderstorm, etc.) Up takes you aloft and never lets you down. It is much more than a routine children's film. It is that film rarity, a movie that affects you emotionally, takes flight with your imagination, and touches the soul. It is a remarkable and captivating achievement! GRADE: A-
