Excellent dinner last night- shrimp dumplings where the texture and flavour of the shrimp came through; delicious grilled mackeral with an eclectic selection of braised and grilled vegetables and grilled pork (medium rare, which is the way it should be cooked with pork of this quality)! Friendly but unobtrusive service. Great value too - would cost twice if it were in Manhattan.

Everything we had was delicious, particularly the yellowtail/jalapeno roll that came with this amazing cilantro puree. The service was attentive but not intrusive, and we were very very well looked after. Maybe the best/most surreal part was the fact that we booked a table for 8 on a Friday night mere hours before dinner. Escandalo!

I've come to 1 or 8 around five times. Every time the service has been consistently great and the food has been borderline mind-blowing. We usually go for the small plates. Favorites: oysters, the ceviche trio, lamb chop, the grilled salmon on a rice ball with broth (forget what it was called). Even the miso soup is unique and amazing. One time they had a yellowtail special that was probably the best sashimi i have ever had. no joke. I get worried because its often empty, although it could have been because our meals were all relatively late in the evening. Anyway, please go support 1 or 8! You won't be disappointed.

Just ate there last night. The tempura, croquettes, double pork belly, and chestnut cake dessert all amazing. Great restaurant, wonderful space, and heartwarming host/proprietor puts this distinctly Williamsburg space on par with the best in Manhattan.
