Too little food for too much money

My husband and I ordered two appetizers and two main courses, which is normally enough for us, and a bottle of wine. The bill was $160 + tip. The amount itself was not a problem for us, but the problem was for that price we expected to be full! The food was good but the portions were miniscule, it was a joke. The main courses should be labeled as "tapas" instead. We felt it was a rip off. After we left the restaurant, we went for pizza to satisfy our hunger.

Perhaps one of the best sashimi meals I've ever eaten, but the attitude of the head waiter was unpleasant and frankly obnoxious. He repeatedly asked why we - a party of twelve - chose to eat at 15 East, implying that we were unable to appreciate the "traditional Japanese" style 15 East represents. He made everything - from ordering wine to asking that they fix the incorrect orders that showed up - feel like we were an inconvenience for him personally. At those prices I expect better service (and that's not even mentioning the slow service ...) That said, the meal IS different than what you might expect at a place like Nobu (which is more fusion oriented) - excellent pieces of fish. If it hadn't been for the waiter we'd likely come back, but as it stands there are enough high-end sushi restaurants in NYC that I'll go someplace else first.

The food took forever to come. When we asked how come the food is taking such a long time, the waiter replied snobbishly that this is fine dining here, as if we are country bumpkins going out for the first time. Over the course of the evening, the waiter's attitude got worse. The food was good but the rudeness of the waiter had dampened our evening.

The best was the tofu dish. It was like the best of the buffalo mozarella but in the japanese version. Divine

Beware of the Seat Nazi!

Made a reservation at the sushi bar for two at 7 on a Thursday. On arrival, however, accosted by a character we've taken to referring to as the "Seat Nazi," one of those gatekeeper types living in their own private Le Cirque circa 1990. Though the place was empty, the Seat Nazi practically ordered us to the narrow end of the bar up against a wall. Asked to switch seats so we could actually move our elbows and view the fish, but brusquely told the rest were “all reserved"—a patent lie since some were unoccupied an hour later. A creepy start to what turned out to be a surprisingly good dining experience—thanks to the intervention of the sushi chef, who sensibly allowed us to choose our own seats. To the fish and the chef's skills, high marks. Pretty authentic without a lot of Nobu-style Vegafication that passes for high-end sushi today. Fresh fish and nuanced take on the straightforward preparation I'm accustomed to from travelling in Asia. The wait staff was professional. Good price to value experience overall. A solid establishment unfortunately marred by the clueless attitudinizing of its maitre d'.

Just found this joint. Had the tasting menu and everything I ate was amazingly fresh and well presented. The service was the best I've had anywhere in a long time. Sit at the sushi bar! I definitely recommend this spot for sushi lovers and will be going back very soon.

this place has gotten great writeups for food and the chef is Someone but at the $$$$ price the service is unforgiveable. we made an 845 reservation, sat down maybe 20 minutes later and were told at 1030, before our entrees had even arrived, that the kitchen was closing. at almost $200 per head, the kitchen shouldn't close till we're done. it was impossible to get drinks, had to ask several times and they kept forgetting, and the menu wasn't really laid out to be able to go on a fish oddessy, the way we'd wanted. one friend asked if she could have the chef's choice but request an interesting/adventurous option, but nope. at this point a first rate server would have stepped in and made some suggestions but ours (we had several during the course of the night) didn't even seem to know where they worked. food was good but experience was not!
