Gem of a restaurant

We had a splendid, delicious dinner at 5 and Diamond. Service was excellent -- friendly, timely, accurate. The food is ambitious and fulfills its ambition. Excellent wines by the glass. Waiter poured a tasting and said "Don't be shy -- if you don't like it, I'll get you something else" -- unnecessary, as the wine was very good and fairly priced. The space is small, but not crowded, and very handsome. Worth a detour.

Will not go back...not worth it.

I have been to this place twice, and both times the bad service has trumped over the quality of the food. And I am a foodie! I have eaten in holes in the wall kind of places with bad service because they have great food. This place has good food. But this place charges downtown prices and does not deliver on downtown service. And as a resident of Harlem, I really wanted this place to be a place where I would go back. Thank goodness that Bier International is now open. Food and drink there are really good. And the service is better there. It's not the same style of service, but I prefer it to Five & Diamond any day. Both times, they made mistakes on orders and the final bill. The second time I was there, they even charged me for something that took too long to come to the table that I canceled, but charged me for it anyways...and then on top of that, it was not even the brunch menu price. If you decide to go be warned, make sure to check your final check.

Definitely Worth Checking Out

5 & Diamond saves the best for last, the highlight of the dining experience being the creme brulee dessert. First time I hit it, I was a little worried. Too much custard, not enough brulee, like little lilly-pads of caramelized sugar floating atop a custard pond as opposed to the traditional, tundra-like cover. But I licked that ramekin clean. The grace note is the slightly bitter, chocolate spongecake lying in wait on the bottom balancing the vanilla sweetness of the custard. Dope. I had the creme brulee twice and would've hit it thrice but for some complimentary cookies given in reward for voluntarily "selling" the dessert to some fellow bar patrons. I think the staffing situation is a bit unsettled, so the service, from the bar to the waitstaff, varies from mediocre to pretty good. The floor managers are eager to please though and largely make up for their charges' deficiencies. Overall, a good experience and a much welcome addition to the neighborhood. Now, if they could only do something about the music... p.s. And the burger's a good look.

My girlfriend took me to 5 & diamond to celebrate my graduation from residency. I had heard that the burger was good and since i have tried almost every other "great" NYC burger I figured I needed to try this one. My girlfriend ordered the striped bass. After waiting for what seemed like forever for the meals to come out they finally arrived. After one bite of the fish my girlfriend looked at me and said "is it rude if I don't eat this, it tastes like something is wrong with it." We told the waitress that something didn't seem right with the fish and the owner quickly came over. The owner took the dish away and brought it back to the kitchen. She came back and told us that everyone in the kitchen tried the fish and that she agreed that the dish tasted very "fishy" but unfortunately that is what the dish is supposed to taste like. The owner apologized and then left our table to attend to what seemed like more important customers sitting at the bar. We were ready to leave at this point but they told us dessert was on them. After dessert the waitress brought us our bill and not only was the terrible striped bass still on the bill but so was the dessert! After one bite of the fish that was then taken back to the kitchen, eaten by the staff, and never brought back we were still charged for it. And to top it off we were charged for the dessert that we didn't want in the first place. Needless to say we will never go back to this restaurant or recommend it to anyone.

i went to 5 & diamond for the first time on saturday for dinner. i arrived at 7:45 pm as i had another engagement at 9:30pm i thought that would be enough time to have a nice dinner. we ordered the 5 course tasting. 1 st course came with pork rinds and i cant eat pork so i asked it to be taken off. the waiter said no problem. the course arrived with the pork rind. the waiter came and said that "the chef is being as asshole" and wouldnt take it off. so i basically forfieted the 1st course. we had about 15-20 minute wait between courses. by 9:30 pm we were still waiting on the 4th course. i had to leave without being served the fourth & fifth courses! because the 1st course was forfeited due to the pork rinds i only got 2 have 2 courses out of five. and i was still charged the full amount of the tasting ($50) for only 2 courses that were served to me! no apology from the manager the manager never even came to our table. i felt like something should have been done to accomadate me but i got nada. what a waste of money!

DMANBURGER "5 and Diamond"-Harlem

The Pat Lafrieda burger, was perfected by Skeen at his last venture, and is carefully constructed with a 60%/30% blend of beef cheek, bavette and pork fat back-which is ground on-site daily. This heart stopper was a gorgeous, 6 oz creation slathered with luscious white cheddar cheese, fresh homemade vinegar dill pickles, red onion and lettuce-all stacked on a char-soft potato bun. I started with a tasting of the Buttermilk Biscuits with creamy-fruity homemade apple butter, which were divine. The Shrimp and Grits Hush puppies followed, with smoked paprika aioli-these puppies were crispy and delectably fantastic ! The Yogurt Granola with plump strawberries and blackberries was fresh and delightful. After this bevy of pleasure it was burger time, the pork-beef beast arrived open-faced with duck fat fried home fries in tow. I carefully stacked the green leafy lettuce and crunchy dill pickles into a towering impressive looking sandwich. The first bite was juicy and bloody, pork fat back ran over my hands as my eyes rolled back in my head, my thought was- These guys are onto something here-

Tried this restaurant a few weeks after its opening and it was really lovely. The waitress and lady who helped us with our wine selection were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We had the trout with peas, burrata starter, rabbit pasta dish and a nice bottle of red wine. Everything was tasty and well cooked. Definitely worth a try for a nice night out in this area.

A friend and I happened to be on the way uptown last Wednesday and we saw this new restaurant The 5 and Diamond. We decided to stop in and I am sooo glad we did. I had the trout and she had the steak, both great dishes...This will definitely be one of my new spots this year...
