I stopped into Michael's after hearing so much about it. I can't usually afford to eat a place so pricey, but they're a part of Restaurant Week this year. The food was excellent. I had the gazpacho appetizer which was very refreshing! I had the wild stripe bass which was cooked to a perfect medium and came with white asparagus. White asparagus alone is usually the cost of what I paid for all three courses - an excellent deal! Dessert was the chocolate mousse with ovaltine ice cream. It was rich and still light and I want to return just to eat the icecream again! The service was very good. The server I had was friendly and chatted with our table for a few moments even though the restaurant was busy. As far as the decor goes, it is a little outdated but some of the artwork is beautiful and modern. I will definitely be back if only to sit at the bar and order icecream and wine and if next summer they partake in restaurant week I will be bringing more of my friends to enjoy Michael's

OVERPRICED. LACKLUSTER. WORST OF THE 80's.

Ok, I went here during restaurant week to see what the hype was about. Yes, there were lots of old people with money. That's about all that's true about the hype. The prices are outrageous for what you get. We're talking simple dishes. And almost everything on the menu is $35. Burger? $35. Fish? $35. How is a plain burger the same price as fish. How is a burger ever $35? Soda? ONLY $7 for one little glass (like half a can). Yes, that's right, they charge $7 for one glass of soda. By the way, I'm not price shopping during restaurant week...I'm value shopping. I'm happy to pay high prices for good food and service but this place is like a bad joke from the 80's. As for the food, COMPLETELY lackluster. Not impressive staff. Food wasn't cooked properly, had to send back twice. Second time back plate with a hair on it...these things can happen by mistake but try to pay extra attention when you've already messed up twice???. Oh and they didn't give out a restaurant week menu despite being on the list.

There is no reason to pay these prices for the food. All ego, no substance.

Michaels's, the Manhattan sibling of the iconic Santa Monica California restaurant, has aged very well. Yes the decor looks a bit dated and it does not have 21st Century decor, but it has a certain charm in its 1980's decor. What makes Michaels is the menu and the preparation of the food - both of which are excellent. The complexity of simple food composed in complicated balances of flavors, colors and textures. While the service is good, one wishes it was a bit more professional and not so Califormia laid back. Overall a great dinning experience. Like a special bottlle of wine from a favorite vintage.
