Fancy a cuppa? Down an unprepossessing East Village street (that appears to be completely residential) lies Podunk, a real NYC gem. You enter what appears to be a junk shop which specialises in assorted garden furniture, to be greeted (on the day I went) with the magical smell of fresh baked cinnamon apple cake. You order at the back, where the proprietess enquires after your particular blend (there are over a hundred teas available). Naturally I had some of that fresh made cake as well, though there were scones and other delicacies available. Choose yourself a table, and tea is brought. How civilised! The place is bonkers, there are no loos, but what the hell... what a marvellous find!
