Mideast East doesn't spring to my mind when it comes to inventive cuisine, but Aburiya Kinnosuke is both imaginative and quite a bargain. Their six course lunch prix fixe for $30 is like a mini-kaiseke meal, almost too much for the midday meal, but definitely not unwelcome. Their evening menu is like Japanese tapas, allowing diners to sample traditional fare, as well as some interpretations of Japanese staples. Highly recommended.

I was very surprised to find this small place so inviting and enchanting. The tofu is house-made, served with a small plate of sel gris, perfectly chopped chives, and ginger. If you can score a seat at the bar, check out the authentic robata grill, it is quite impressive as the chef reaches over and hands you your selection on a wooden platter. The prices are indeed well worth the visit, but you may be hungry in the end.
