Aloutte offers Upper West Siders a wonderful dining experience at modest prices. In fact it offers an early bird special for the budget conscious which includes hanger steak as an entree choice. This is a must! Their fish dishes are outstanding and tastefully prepared and presnted. Many wine choices are available to complement your meal. While the restaurant is somewhat narrow and can feel a bit cramped, the upstairs seating is somewhat more roomy. The service, while not too swift, is friendly and courteous. Sometimes the wait for dessert can be exasperating, especially if it's crowded. Still, a great place for a great meal.

The menu is ordinary. I had a leftover special of coq au vin, which was edible, but no better. It felt make-shift. Service was okay. Atmosphere was tired. A friend suggested it for its location. I'd have been happier elsewhere. It's not expensive. Dinner was under $40 with the glass of wine.

The food was superb. I had the breast of duck which made me sigh with delight; my host has the scallops and was just as delighted. The creme brulee was exceptional. Alouette is small downstairs; I did not check their upper room. But the design of the room makes it feel much larger with a judicious use of mirrors to open it up. My only disappointment the entire evening was their not having orange to put in my Lillet. I will certainly go back and soon.
