Great Ambience

Anyone complaining that the food was salty and oily, and that wine drinking was encouraged, obviously doesn't understand the point of tapas. Tapas are salty, oily, wine bar food. Therefore, it would make sense that the restaurant is set up for drinkers. As for them trying to make a profit on the food, I'd agree with that-- the portions are tiny for the price you pay, but at least the dishes aren't as overpriced as some other tapas joints in the city. I went there in the bitter cold. The huge fireplace instantly warmed us, and we loved the smell-- like a ski lodge or a barbecue pit. We had the goat cheese in lavender honey, the oxtail ravioli, the spinach salad, the bacon-wrapped dates and olives, the confit of pork tenderloin, and the fondue. The food was pretty good except for the bacon-wrapped dates, which were exceptional. Our server was very sweet, and we lingered over our meal and weren't rushed at all. The adventurousness of the food, and the abilty of the place to handle large groups means I'll probably be back.

Oily, Salty, Sugary Vulgarian Cuisine

If overly oily, excessively salty, and inappropriately sugary foods are your desire look no further. The chef is obviously a vulgar gourmand, not a gourmet. We tasted nearly every dish trying (in vain) to find something palatable, but could not. The food sat in my stomach all night and was still unpleasantly curled (or curdled) up there in the morning. The restaurant seems set up for drinkers and to maximize food profits. Even so, I was unable to get past the first two sips of the red wine I ordered; it was extremely acidic. I shifted to canned Sapporo beer. The white wine my date had was better, but nothing special. The profit motive is clear from the types of foods served-- tapas of undistinguished white bread (with saccharine baba ganoush, tasting like a cross between tartar sauce and sweet pickle relish), potatoes au gratin, breaded and fried cream cheese, Brussels sprouts burned and drowned in oil, etc. Also, the restaurant is NOT vegetarian/vegan friendly as one of our party can attest. I rarely write reviews, but when I have such a bad food experience I want to warn others. Avoid!

Carlos Santana said that good music re-arranges your molecular structure. He could've been talking about good food as well: Chef Harrison Mosher has re-arranged my molecules. The black fig dessert is the most delicious thing I've ever put into my mouth.

This is the first time I have written a review... but ALTA certainly had won my attention. Each dish that my husband and I ordered had our taste buds buzzing! The flavours were unique and surprising. The service was OK - but to give the staff a break, Tappas is is not based on timing, you just keep on ordering more from the menu when you feel like it. I had a very enjoyable Birthday. Thank you ALTA! (and my hubbie!)

I love everything about this place from the rustic decor to the lively crowd, friendly service, and delectable food. Here are the five things I tried which were all AMAZING. 1. Fried goat cheese with lavender-infused honey 2. Serrano ham with Valdeon cheese and pineapple on sourdough bread 3. Gigantic grilled prawns 4. Carmelized Cauliflower with Manila clams, chorizo, and raisins (this was my favorite) and 5. Risotto with mushrooms and parmesan cheese (my second favorite)

Highly recommend the foie gras, fried brussel sprouts. when the jumbo shrimp isn't frozen it is excellent, the spanish version of creme brulee is ambrosia, the potatoes dish is yummy. One of the fish dishes was insipid.

I keep longing for the tapas we had in Barcelona, so ran to Alta shortly after it was reviewed and found each dish disappointing. The grilled sardines were very good, but the portion was so tiny, three of us had barely more than a sniff. The place is pleasant enough, there's a good selection of wines, but we had maybe 9 small plates for three of us and were okay to leave things on the plate because nothing was compelling.

We liked the idea of small plates, and ordered the recommended five for two people. Sitting at the bar was a great experience. The upper dining room (found by going through the kitchen!) was a little strange and removed, but eating at the bar was pleasant. Stuffed potato was excellent, but all the plates we tried were original and fun.

The service was fantastic and the setting was perfect for meeting up with someone for great conversation. We shared four tapas between us, octopus salad, stuffed mini red peppers, wonderful bread with serrano ham and blue cheese and a delicous eggplant spread. (and were full afterwards). The beer selection isn't extensive but very good. Also a large selection of wines including desert wines and sherrys. The best part was the way above average service. The staff is highly attentive and the decor was relaxing, which added up to a much needed night out.
