The overall decor is hip but at the same time emphasizing natural materials of brick and barn siding aged wood, combined with glass, a touch of Chinois wall paper and a pseudo-classic art gallery located on a ceiling. The entrance bar area is large and inviting. Seating in the front of the house has a casual and contemporary feel. The first room in the back is small and slightly Oriental. Further back is the raised gallery that has views of the overall restaurant. A final room that is the least interesting is used for private parties and overflow dinners. The menu is primarily Mediterranean, with focus on foods of Spain and Middle Eastern cuisines. This combination is rare in Manhattan, actually in the United States, but common in Spain and parts of Mediterranean France. The menu while small has fantastic gems waiting to provide excellent savory and spicy flavors to the fortunate dinners. The lunch menu is short; however it provides a wonderful sampling of the cuisine. Service is both casual and professional at both lunch and dinner. Wine service is above average.

Having read the greatest reviews, we planned our Saturday night there. Disappointed! Far from what the restaurant's website represents! Poor entres menu and highly overpriced. Highly overpriced. Overrated and overpriced.

Ask for a table at the portrait room!

My husband and I had dinner at Amalia with another couple in a recent trip to New York. It was very well recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel but we were expecting to be disapointed considering the proximity to the Broadway "fuss". WOW! Amalia is the most beautiful restaurant I have been to in a long time. The entrance is amazing, lots of candle light and the "Portrait Room" (where we sat) actually has all the portraits on the ceiling. Sounds weird but it is in fact stunning... The food was not spetacular, but it was very good (it honestly became a second priority given the décor). I will definately come back next time I'm in New York!
