This is a divine little Indian fusion restaurant. Every dish I have had at Amma is a delicious and creative variation of familiar Indian dishes. What I love best is that the vegetarian dishes are as varied and tasty as the non-vegetarian dishes, which means I can go with my vegetarian friends and not feel as if I am sticking them with one choice of entree. The tasting menu (which can also be vegetarian) is a terrific way to try a bite of all their best dishes and the air conditioning there is rather cold so its much better to be served one course at a time rather than ordering ala carte and having everything come at once. The best dishes in my view have to be the manchurian cauliflower, the shrimp and the deep fried okra. They have a very nice wine selection as well. The decor is nice but not over the top but the food is fit for a maharaja!

Having never visited India, Amma served the best Indian food I've ever tasted! I recommend trying the lamb stuffed with apricots, and the naan will melt in your mouth! The decor creates the perfect tone for the restaurant, and the servers are very kind and attentive (without disrupting your nice meal).

It used to be so easy to get a table at this sweet little spot, with outstanding food, attentive (but never overbearing) service and a soothing soundtrack and lighting system... Even though its tougher since it received glowing reviews from the NYT, NY Magazine, New Yorker, Zagats etc., its still definitely worth planning ahead to visit! I'd like to suggest something, but everything is wonderful.

Amma seems undistinguished from the street, but once you enter you find yourself in a perfect cool orange oasis, with soothing music, great service and spectacular food. It is surprisingly empty at lunch given its wonderful lunch specials (it may be one of the only places in Midtown East to get a wonderful dosai or other South Indian specialities) and how close it is to all those offices. All the better for me!

Colleagues suggested Amma giving it a reputation of creative and explosive flavor. My wife and I completely agree. The vegetarian tasting menu paired with the wine brought out a "taste explosion." I was especially fond of the crunchy spinach fritter appetizer. We've traveled throughout India multiple times experimenting with the local dives followed by the posh 5 star restaurants. Amma fits amongst the finest we've ever had.

On holiday in New York recently we went to this delightful little Indian restaurant with friends. My friends mother had an unusual dietary restriction and the servers were most helpful in picking out the dishes for us keeping in mind this restriction. The piece de resistance for me a mumbaite was the "absolutely authentic" Bombay Bhelpuri crisp and airy with just the right mix of the tangy and spicy chutnies it was the winner of the evening!!

Absolutely fantastic place- the tasting menu is simply gorgeous, but you'd better take it slow, as every course trumps the one before it, and there are many! The Cauliflower is a sumptuous delight (don't be afraid to ask Chef Sevir what the secret ingredients are), the tandoori shimp tenderly melts in your mouth, and the lamb- oh, the lamb- it might as well be fois gras... (the deserts are an entirely different chapter of your dining career- so simple, but so good...refinement at it's best). They will be sure to take care of you too- a truly admirable staff.

My meal at Amma has taken the lead as the all-time favorite culinary event. With friends I spent 3+ hours celebrating the tasting menu. The food and wine pairings were mind-blowingly perfect! I recommend the seven course tasting menu ; it's a journey into Indian cuisine. Everything from the Bhel Puri, Spinach Chaat, the crispy okra to the addictive mango cheesecake was perfect in taste and progression. Try Amma - it is a magical restaurant."
