Unexpected surprise

I ended up in Angelica's by accident with my daughter as were we were planning to eat next door which was closed. Without knowing Angelica Kitchen was a vegan restaurant we went inside because the place looked busy and laid back. My 13 year old and I both thought the food was inventive, delicious, and for us meat lovers; different. I stayed away from the tofu as I can't stand the stuff but might be persuaded to try it next time as all the tofu free choices (not to many)we ate were really tasty.

Healthy food does not have to be tha bland

Though I commend their interest in healthy and organic food, I deplore the blandness of their cooking. There is a misconception that healthy vegetables must be boiled or steamed with no salt, but new research has found that the way to get the most nutrients from vegetables is to cook them in olive oil. A little bit of garlic and a variety of herbs could add flavor without taking away any of the health. The dish that I had, the rice bowl, contained the most bland beans, tofu, squash and collard greens I had ever had. The black sesame dressing did not help much so I had to use a lot of soy sauce to make it more palatable and be able to eat the food.

If I could, I'd eat here every day!

My default setting is cheeseburgers and Pop Tarts, but Angelica never fails me. The daily kanten parfait trumps any cookies-and-cream ice cream out there, the cashew spread is a country of flavor, and I'm as obsessed with their chili with the Southern-style cornbread and butternut squash and red onion salsa as Wylie Dufresne is with Eggs Benedict. This hardcore meatatarian never feels deprived digging into the dishes here. Plus, the communal table means I can skip to the front of the line. (Great, now I've just convinced myself to go there again tonight ...) Yum!

cute place, nice vibe and concept, but the service was so-so and the food was very bland. We enjoyed the appetizers, but a little salt, salad dressing, and seasoning would have been most welcome to complement some wonderful ingredients.

They have a choice of delicious, interesting and ethnically inspired food (e.g. Asian, Mediteranean, US Southern) ranging from inexpensive to moderately priced--certainly by NY standards. You can have a copious lunch for under $10. Many of the salads (Dragon Bowl!) and dishes can be ordered smaller sized if you have a petite appetite or pocket book.

An excellent, *nice* vegan restaurant

My boyfriend took me here on my birthday, as I was on a strict vegan diet at the time. Wonderful! The atmosphere was lovely, and it had a small-but-cozy niceness to it that a lot of vegan restaurants lack - it didn't feel too "crunchy" or anything. The "turkey dinner"-style tempeh sandwich was *amazing*, as was the carob frosting on the corn cake. I was quite convinced that vegan can taste very good.

I like the service, staff are very attentive. They should try to improve the dessert menu, though !
