No more Anthos

I called to order lunch for pick up today and to my dismay Anthos was gone. Someone answered the phone with the greeting "Thank you for calling Empire Steak House." Guess we have a new steak house on the block.

Really nice "reinvented" greek cuisine. Lunch menu gives you great value for fantastic food. Service isn't that great (been there more than 5 times, and it's always the same...), but the food is worth coming back over and over again (daily fish selection is always good, as well as the raw meze and the lamb burger)
What a disappointment!

Food was quite good but unfortunately service was REALLY lacking. We waited at our table for almost one hour before our appetizers/salads were served. When we asked the waiter to please check on the order, he indicated that he had not realized we were "in a hurry". Seriously? This was during the lunch service and the restaurant was very empty. Total meal from start to finish took well over two hours (was there with clients, not a casual lunch!). Unacceptable. All our waiter seemed to do was walk back and forth through the dining room looking lost. Unfortuntely, will not be back.
Thank God we did not rely on the reviews we read here

Had an awesome experience. The food was impeccable and the service was good. The wait staff very knowledgeable. Although pricey, it was worth it.

Had a dinner presentation here in the private room upstairs. Food is decent but the service was very good.

seems like every restaurant investment in town makes money whether it is good or bad. unfortunately, anthos is one of the bad ones. l have been enjoying my dinning experiences in manhattan more than twenty years, l have never seen that kind of greek salad, l thought they were kidding anyway loup de meer which is branzino as known as lavraki, simply terrible. they need to be more generous and tasty. we had a huge dissapointment. however service was so smooth and kind but l realized that the young lady who has titled as gm needs a long way to learn this business, she is so amateur. by the way prices are sky high and the decor is so ugly. please, do not waste your time here. try somewhere else much cheapper and professional.
A welcome surprise

We were moderately anxious about the conflicting reviews, but decided to explore Anthos during Restaurant Week (mindful of the $$$$ designation). Three of us, all discerning diners, lunched there today and were thoroughly delighted by the experience. The food was superb: fish (both raw and cooked), lamb, snails, vegetables, starches; the only moderate disappointment came with a pedestrian poached pear, promising lavendar and honey and delivering an echo of canned, instead. Service was impeccable; our waiter was knowledgable and helpful about both food and wine. We will be back, and hopefully soon!

I went to lunch at Anthos because i keep hearing what an up and coming restaurant it is.; it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. The food was bad, every dish lacked seasoning. The decor is non existent, everything is white or black, no imagination, but the service blew both aspects away. From the coat check girl who handed me my jacket with two hangers attached, the servers who repeatedly took away my dish while my girlfriend was still eating, our wine glasses were never refilled, they missed the silverware before one course, and the check was ushered to my table the minute i had taken my last bite, though maybe it was a blessing since i wanted out of there fast. I will never return.

I was definitely ramped up to try Anthos after hearing a number of good reviews. Hot off the heals of a vacation in Greece, I was eager to try this "Haute Greek" cuisine that seems all the rage these days. From the complementary amuse bouche to the main course the food was banal towards dreadfully bad. Food was salty, rice under cooked, and the fish, which seems like an intregal aspect of the menu, did not taste as fresh as it could have. For the amount of money you'll spend you're better off going to Milos or Molyvos.
Fragile as a Cherry Blossom

Anthos is Greek for blossom, like the cherry blossoms in sepia photos adorning the walls, which have transformed the former Acqua Pazza into an elegant Greek dining room. The Michael Psilakis delicate food is the essence of Greek cuisine, not the robust fare one expects from a Greek restaurant. We sampled Anthos in the first ten days after the opening. The food and service was impeccable, including perfect wine service. We appreciated the elegant food, but questioned if this very high priced cuisine would attract an appreciative audience. Our complaints were with the front of the house. When we arrived to an only one-third occupied restaurant, we were disappointed to be seated shoulder to shoulder with other dinners in the rear of the restaurant. When we asked for an end table we were told it was assigned. When we again asked half way through the meal to move to this unoccupied table, the same response. The table was never occupied. Owner Donatella Arpaia seated at the bar throughout seemed to care little for the dinners, only her entourage. Curious.
