Last Sunday we walked from our son's new apartment in Prospect Heights to brunch at Applewood. We were hopeful as we took our seats and watched one waiter scurry at top speed through the nice dining room with attractive plates of food. We did not get that waiter. We waited for water, for our coffee, for refills and for our food, which came out plate by plate. I even had to wait for the butter as my pancakes cooled. The food was OK, but the bacon was greasy, the squash omelette was nothing special, the potatoes we got were sort of mashed as opposed to the crisp home fries we saw at another table, and we had to send back the toast. Yes, the toast! The toast wasn't toasted. Then we waited for more toast and got not the whole wheat we'd ordered but brioche, which was kind of toasted. The burgers came on this same toasted brioche, which collapsed quickly under the juicy, tasty burger. Was it our waitperson? Did our order go to a new chef? Questions we won't return to answer.

Food arrived cold. Server couldn't be bothered. "Fancy" brunch items - interesting to read, but not well executed.

Service was poor throughout. It took nearly ten minutes for someone to take our drink order, fifteen minutes for drinks to arrive and at least forty-five minutes for two plates of scrambled eggs.
The applewood bacon and maple fennel sausage were good, as was the blood orange bellini. The veal hash would have been decent had it not been burned in the pan. There were several burnt pieces and the dish was overwhelmed a burnt taste. Poor showing.
Water was filled in once over an hour & no one asked whether we wanted another round of drinks until we were ready to leave. Adding insult to injury was the tab, which came to $50 for two. Far too much for so little.

over all everything was just average.
i was unmoved by my summer omelette and the potatoes were very bland.
service was just okay.
my coffee was not refilled even once. the server never came to check on us after our food arrived and we had to flag someone else down for our check.
the biscuits and jelly were however, quite delicious.
might give them another try.
overall = overrated.

i tried this place out for brunch and the food was delicious, fresh, and well portioned. atmosphere was unpretentious and welcoming. brunch drinks were tasty as well.
i was most impressed by the wait staff who were all super friendly and attentive. i dropped a knife at one point and when i picked it up, a waiter already had a new one for me. i'm looking forward to trying their dinner and sitting outside.

we had the best time at applewood last weekend. scallops, veal heart stew (wow!!!), pompano and short ribs. great apple cocktail, and a crazy preserved lemon gin drink with sherry?!fabulous! swift but gracious service, even with a bit of a snooty crowd, but you could tell the staff all get along and that's always a sign of a good place. definitely worth the trip.
and amazing desserts! don't know about that other post complaining, but if you're anniversary night gets ruined by a dessert, then maybe you've got some other issues to deal with!
this place is a gem(wish it was bigger though, and dinner on Sunday would be great).

I've been wanting to try this place for a while, but I wasn't impressed at all. The "biodynamic" ingredients weren't particulary tasty and I found nothing memorable about my dining experience here. Overall, food was okay. Service was friendly and competent, although I didn't find my waiter's lip piercing very appetizing. I wouldn't go back.

A little piece of Manhattan in Park Slope

When the weekend service cuts you off from Manhattan but you find yourself craving it nonetheless - the two-digit drinks, the punishing hauteur, the fancy-ingredient aspirations, the damn good cuisine, the dent in your credit card bill at the end of the night - just try to get into Applewood without a reservation. You may be able to squeeze in at the bar. The waitstaff has mastered the art of being impeccably polite without being at all warm or friendly. Who cares; the food will be (generally) amazing, not unlike Bernardin's.
One caveat: stay away from the onion martini - I love onions, consider myself adventurous, guzzle marinated tilefish and lye-soaked duck eggs, etc., but just thinking of that ill-conceived monstrosity of a cocktail makes me want to toss my cookies.

Blue Hill be Damned

I have eaten at Hearth, Craft, Blue Hill, and the like, and there is very little that is missing from the Applewood other than the crowds. I had hake that was perfectly cooked, lovingly seasoned, simply presented, a well selected cheese plate, and a trio of appetizers. Everything was as advertised (I could taste every ingredient) and affordable.
Where food and the care that goes into preparing it is the focus, I don't care if there is a tablecloth, or if Michael J Fox is at the next table. Get me good food, in a nice room, and have someone serve it to me who knows what they are doing. This is what happens at Applewood - if your dining experience is enhanced by pretense, look elsewhere. There is nothing here but good food made out of respect for the ingredients and the customer that pays for it. I have recommended this restaurant to a few people and heard nothing but glowing praise.

Venturing out of Williamsburg has been difficult due to the culinary artists that feed me there...but Applewood was worth the trek on the F train. The tasting menu is worth the price. The scallops were divine with a rich sauce, the delicious lobster broth came in a sipping espresso cup (the way it should have come), and my favorite part of the meal was the gnocci with pieces of venison. While the tasting menu doesn't bring family size portions, you're intoxicated by the rich flavors that you want to beleive that every bite was made for you, so quantity is limited. Our 2 hr plan was thwarted to 4 hours to our disbelief- every minute magical and taste-bud-fantastic!
