Quite worth the Artichoke-newbies choking up the line not knowing what to get, and even worth the tourists who ask what's in a Margherita. Even as a fan of Thin crust pizza, the artichoke pizza is heavy, cheesy, heavenly goodness. The Crab pizza is also not to be missed.

When we got to the front of the line, we realized that it wasn't really necessary. The only reason was because there is one person selling pizza, and he was extremely slow. The restaurant is too small to have another person helping, but the guy is not even of average speed. He takes one order at a time, heats up the pizza, packs it up, takes the money, forgets to give napkins to everyone, gives the person some napkins after they realize there's no napkins on the counter and asks for some, AND THEN HE GOES ON TO THE NEXT PERSON. I think he averaged about 5 minutes per customer, compare to 30 seconds at any other above average pizza-by-the-slice joint. I must say the ingredients were high quality and fresh, but the crust was so hard and burnt that I had to throw it away.

2 years ago we were in an internet cafe on E20th St (?), a couple of tourists looking for somewhere close by to get decent pizza. Another couple noticed the intent of our Googling and suggested Artichoke Basille's Pizza & Brewery. We went and waited in an interminable line in the steaming heat but we persevered and our wait turned out to be worth it. The over-crowded shop sent us to the street with our slices and never before have I enjoyed pizza like I did that day ( I can still taste those tomatoes).

The spinach artichoke pizza is simply too rich. I suggest sharing it with someone. It's just too greasy, and oily. Even though I was starving, I had trouble rationalizing eating the whole thing for health reasons alone.
Go to l'asso and order the 'puta di mare'. It will change your life.
BUT, the 32 oz. big gulp of Bud is kind of cute, and CHEAP ($5.50)

I went a few months ago for the first time. I honestly thought the pizza was overpriced. They have a few choices to pick from. The main choice was the Artichoke pizza. Its seems weird but the pizza was excellent. The taste is simply amazing. It taste like a true NYC pizza. I love love loved it. I highly recommend it. Its not a place where you sit and eat. Its a hole in the wall. Its a take out joint. You must go. People have given it bad reviews but try it out for yourself and see.

Don't go late friday or saturday night, it's that simple. The line gets ridiculous because every pizza is fresh, delicious and affordable. The tiny inside of this pizza kitchen is not meant to relax and eat in. Get your pizza and go home or go when it isn't guaranteed to be peak traffic.
This pizza is better than Lombardi's.
Just do it.

I went last Thurs night and there was a line out the door (in the rain). But I only waited about 5 min for my 5 very large slices. The artichoke pizza was very good with plenty of mozzarella, grated pecorino and olive oil. The "margarita" slice was less impressive but still very tasty with a nice crust.
The service wasn't so great, but I imagine the cashier/expediter was a bit frazzled from the jerk customers who ordered before me. Do they really only bake 1 pizza per hour? Nope. I personally watched 4 pies go into the ovens during my short 5 minute wait.
My only gripe: no where to eat. No seats, only a narrow 6 ft long plank/bar against the wall. We ended up eating our pizza outside in the rain huddled under the front door awning of the NY Eye & Ear Hospital a few doors down.

Look, I LOVE Pizza!!! Not just any pizza...Good Pizza! I'm a tough critic too. It had been a few years since having a slice because no other place was making them good. I don't get what the whole deal is with people and thin crust pizza. I don't think that's what New York should be represented by. New York is supposed to be the land of EVERYTHING BIG,RIGHT!? Well I think if people are going to indulge in a slice of pizza with a surplus amount of calories, it might as well be thick and doughy and full of ingredients. That's what I LOVE about Artichoke. When I first took a bite of Artichoke's pizza it was love at first bite. I was so smitten, I had one of each slice with my boyfriend! I know these are hard times, but $4.00 a slice just didn't matter to me. I'm torn between the Spinach & Artichoke, and the Crab (YUMMY). Artichoke is very authentic and unique, and I hope business continues to thrive.

I wanted to believe the hype (the line), I really did. But unfortunately it is just not deserved. The artichoke slice I had tonight, left a lot to be desired. I am a native New Yorker and some-what of a foodie, and I don't have anything nice to say about my experience other than it only set me back $4. When not using a brick oven, pizza is really about two things: 1) ingredients 2) proportions. The whale of a slice I had this evening was one of the most disproportionate slices I have ever tasted. The proportions were so off, I couldn't tell how fresh anything was. The service was also horribly slow. I am glad they are doing well with lines out the door, but I really don't understand it. Probably makes better 3am drunk food. Wait, what did this have to do with Di Fara?!?

Slices are huge and loaded with basil and cheese. Definitely try their namesake artichoke pizza - a bit on the heavy side - but delicious all the same. Didn't have any problems with the service, but then again, this was for a late-night pizza run.
