Asiate is the stylish and elegant restaurant on the 35th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel. And while the decor and service matches the height of its location, unfortunately both the menu and kitchen do not. While no one expects a purely Asian menu from this sophisticated restaurant, with a renowned Japanese chef in the kitchen (at least it is reported he is in the kitchen) the diner does expect Asian influence. Rather the international cuisines could be at any French, American, Australian, etc. top restaurant. The prix fixe menu does offer many options and some are far more enticing than others. Service is outstanding, and the atmosphere and views almost compensate for the lack luster performance form the kitchen.

Go for the views and have a drink at the lounge...but skip the food. It is weird and poorly executed. The tuna is beautiful but it comes with an unpleasant sweet and fishy sauce. The crab is fresh but is drenched in cream. Nothing saves the dry quinoa. The pannacota is sublime but it is accompanied with chunks of squash. It is cute to have six little dishes, but not if they are just weird and bad, (The duck is a winnter though.) The service is unionized hell, our waitress was surly and pressured us to order a $300 dollar wine for Lunch...Why? It just made the whole thing unplesant. We were sat near the bussing table where our waitress was arguing louldly with the busboys, Not a good experience.

After reading some favorable reviews and being a fan of Japanese-French cuisine, I was looking forward to the evening. I found the menu was confusing to the imagination and suspected it was being over-ambitious, and tasting the dishes at our table proved I was unfortunately right. Some of the dishes went overboard with too many flavors going on without focus, and surprisingly my fish was overcooked, a no-no for a restaurant of this supposed calibre and price range. Japanese-French? Try Fusion X 100. The wine list was indeed impressive but the prices were outrageous, a mark up that exceeds any I've seen to date. I do have to say, though, that the atmosphere was surprisingly laid back, with great, attentive and unpretentious service, and of course the view was outstanding.

I've dined at Asiate for dinner and have found the food to be excellent, but, I must say, the brunch is absolutely wonderful and worth doing over and over again. A great value, a great view, with great service. Though I agree that there is a definite "tourist trap" vibe in the evenings, I will remind my other reviewers that the restaurant is in a HOTEL, which tends to, on occassion, attract a tourist or two...

Stayed at the Mandarin this weekend and enjoyed a fabulous brunch and dinner at Asiate. Brunch was family friendly, do take the kids and dinner was an elegant, sophisticated affair that lacked the pretention of other restaurants of this caliber. Great crowd and a lovely setting. Did an overnight package with my bride and spent a most fabulous day. The Brunch was amazing, the pork belly and French toast rule, then to prepare for dinner had a spa treatment. It just gets better; Dinner was the tasting menu with wine pairing. Everything was exquisite but the standout was the buckwheat pasta with quail egg and sea urchin. Devine... The wine selections were interesting, well paired and abundantly served. There was absolutely nothing that could have been done better, the service was seamlessly executed and impeccable, the food fabulous. That is the highest compliment for a restaurant. Bravo Asiate, Bravo...
