Of course there are hundreds and hundreds of very good NYC restaurants and Back Forty is one of them. Is it sooooo good that you need to travel there special? No. Is it even a top 5 destination in the East Village? Not for me. But it was good. Went on a Saturday night, around 6PM, and there was plenty of space. Sat at the bar. Very good craft beer selection. Had the burger, which was very good but a bit small in size. Enjoyed the Pork Jowls but won't need to try them again. Would I eat here again? Sure, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

Dug their burger at the Burger Bash. Great seasoning, flavor and crust. Decided I had to try the place so visited twice w the kids. First: Fri evening, told their was over an hour wait, although I swear there were empties, so.... we left and went to Veselka. Returned on Sun nite and clueless hostess serves the 3 of us at a tiny 2 top wedged next to a group of loud drunks. Got up and asked for a table outside or elsewhere. Marched to a goup table outside, which was basically a bricabrac filled empty lot. and they tried to put us on the edge of someone elses table. Saw a fine table inside but told "that is for 4" but we were 3! Asked the hipster "so, we can be wedged into a 2 near some drunks or sit at someone elses table while you have a perfectly good table for us?" He replies, "Yep." New Yorker here, Called manager who finally seated us there after they took awhile to clear it. Keep in mind the place was getting ready to make last call. Odd server punished us for ordering tap by serving it warm, a common annoyance nowadays. Ordered the burgers, which were good, but didn't enjoy em as much as at the Bash for all the reasons stated above. Wouldn't return because there isn't a neighborhood in Manhattan without a few great burger spots and I am fortunate that our family escaped Avenue B 50 years ago.

Back Forty is the best resturant i have ever been to. The Food is amazing. The Burger is the best burger i have ever had, AND everything is organic and local and Owner Peter Hoffman And Chef Shanna Pacifico really believe in Local and Organic Products so that makes me feel really good when i eat there. its AMAZINGLY affordable. and the portions are great. Dessert and Drinks were amazing. and the wait staff always seem on it. Overall you should Tohts Go to this place it is amazing.

My friend and I were sullenly directed to the back wall of tables at the empty restaurant: "just sit over there" directed the hostess. I asked which of the drinks containing ginger she liked best, and she looked at me like I had seven eyebrows. Then when we inquired whether the music could be turned down a touch, she looked at us, hard, and said "they'll just turn it up again when more people get here." If she had been our server, I would have left or complained, but thankfully she was replaced by a very pleasant young woman who did a great job the rest of the night. Skip dessert.

The front of house is a mess - I've gone twice: the first time the host would not even put our names on the waiting list because one of our party was not there yet - but the wait was over an hour - WTF! The second time, we were seated, but the host and the waiters had no clear boundaries on who was taking care of the tables. Food is just OK - though some interesting choices. Decor is bland and layout is clunky. The bar is nice and the bartenders seemed great - nice selection of beer - but impossibly crowded at night. (The codfish hushpuppies were mostly hushpuppy.)

Tried Back Forty because hubby likes Savoy and were in the mood for chicken and waffles. If you've already been to the likes of Amy Ruth and others like it, don't bother with this version. The waffle was overcooked (though kudos to them for bringing another), the chicken was juicy but woefully underseasoned, and the biscuit was warm on top, ice cold in the middle and bone dry throughout. We also tried the grass fed burger, which was serviceable, but not worth ordering again. The fries looked and tasted quite sad -- it was clear that they had not been freshly made. The best thing about the fries was the ketchup, which was flavorful. But good ketchup doesn't do much unless you have a good burger and fries to go with it. The only inspired thing we tried was the doughnut, which was hot and spicy-tasting, even if the sauce covering it was a bit cloying. On the bright side, the service was good, the decor was spare but nicely done, and at $40, it certainly didn't break the bank. But delicious and worth a return, it was decidedly not.

I've been to Back 40 over ten times and every time has proved to be excellent. The seasonal menu is always changing and the nightly specials are delicious! Service is consistently great. I'd recommend Back 40 to anyone for any occasion - its casual enough to go on a week night but nice enough for a special occasion. My boyfriend and I went for valentines and were seated right away and had a wonderful meal.

When I saw a whole pig being carried to the dining room, I knew I would like this place. We started with the pork jowls appetizer--tender bits of pork goodness. I had the grass-fed burger with cheese and homemade ketchup, with a side of onion rings rightly praised by the server as he set them down. Sadly, I didn't have room for doughnuts, so I think I'm going back next week. It also has a great unpretentious, homey atmosphere, and good prices for the quality of food. I've paid the same amount for just OK fare elsewhere.

yes, the food is fantastic. very, very well done. trout seasoned to perfection, pork done oh so delicious. super helpful bartender got my date a new bottled beer when he overheard she didn't like the one she had ordered (too hoppy). the back forty chardonnay is fantastic too, btw. nice and dark dining room, you can really relax ... but the place is NOISY AS HELL -- why don't designer's plan more for acoustics? hard floors, walls and furniture make this place a non-stop gabfest echo chamber.

Back Forty has a nice barnyard atmosphere that's less gritty than what you'd expect in Alphabet City. We started with the special appetizer of the day--the Buttermilk Biscuits with Chili Butter. The biscuits had a crumbly crust with a moist and buttery interior. I'm surprised they're not listed on the regular menu! For my entree, I chose the Grilled Trout and a side of Onion Rings w/ith Chipotle Mayo. While it was on the predictable side, the trout was tasty. (I decided to forgo the burger for a healthier selection, but took a detour with the onion rings.) I was looking forward to crispity-crunchity onion rings, but they had a thick, slightly soggy coating, from which the "onion ring" itself slid out of. They were cleverly served with a mini squeeze bottle of the sauce, though. We did save room for the doughnuts, which had a lemon-lavender glaze that night. Very lovely. All in all, a nice dinner but there were no cult-like items to lure me back to this destination. I would come back again if I were in the area, though.
