Too Crowded

  • No, I would not go back!

This place is too crowded and too popular, unless you are going to get exposed to the crowd. The tables and service are not conducive to a date (unless your date wants the crowd). The oysters were great, and the wine selection excellent, but I would go elsewhere in this part of town.

Balthazar is so New York. It comes onto the scene with all the hype and fanfare, then it's overrun by tourists, then it is reclaimed by locals. The food at Balthazar was never terribly exciting to me, but it does have ambiance. When you have the late night munchies and don't want to share your space with visitors from Arkansas, late night Balthazar still holds charm.

Solid food, good prices and quite a scene!

The food here is consistently good, and the seafood tower is fresh, plentiful and great fun, as is the general scene. Watch out for celebs and beautiful people sucking up the precisely made cocktails. Service is adequate, but the experience is the key here.

The food has never been the point here-- it's a luxe experience that entitled people can have in Soho. Of course the oysters are good -- they'd better be! The irritating buy-the-bottle-of-vodka-for-the-table thing is thankfully fading into Balthazar's trendoid past -- but the sommelier here is excellent and the cute, patient, helpful bakery staff at its outpost next door is terrific.

Balthazar was as delicious as I had heard it was going to be. Usually I am dissapointed by restaurants with hype, this was one of the few I was not. Even the pasta dish was tasty. The steak is excellent, and cooked exactly to taste, the mussels are perfect and you cannot skip the french fries. Balthazar is definitely worth the price - and it is definitely pricely. I can't wait to go back.

The best bread in town. Great for a late lunch. Salads are wonderful. Quieter at lunch, but food and service great any time. Major crowds at night but reservations are usually honored on time.

I like to come here for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. It gets too loud and crowded during dinner. If brunching w/friends, def. order the bread basket. It is a nice assortment that includes my favorite, Valrhona chocolate bread. Yumm! The menu is French bistro and the onion soup is delish. The waitstaff is the right amount of attentive and friendly.

Does this place have people that keep coming back? The waiters are SO RUDE that you feel like you are interrupting their gossip time. The food is always warm…. When it should be cold, it's warm, and when it should be hot, it's warm. And yes, like every other sucker, I'll be back on Sunday with my paper for more rudeness!
