I picked Bao 111 after reading through all the other reviews. I took my girlfriend there for our one year anniversary before hitting the town. I was seated promptly (I had a reservation) and the waiters were VERY attentive, the drinks from the bar were excellent. We had the mignonette (which was amazing) as well as the shrimp w/noodles which was great. The appetizers were hit or miss, skip over the chicken and head for the spicy tuna spring rolls which were excellent. Overall I'd recommend the place and certainly go back.

I've been to Bao 111 a hand full of times now, and out of all the late night places in the neighborhood, this one is the best. The service is awesome, and they have some of the best frog's legs i've ever tried. Every time I go at like midnight I'm always shocked at how amazing the food is for a late night spot.

I know this place is everyone's darling but I am just not impressed! The house "special" drinks were OK, mine had so much ginger it was a little sickening. I ordered the Iron pot chicken which when it came I had to crane my neck and look completely into the pot just to see the food (Big pots=little food). It consisted of some white meat chicken pieces a bit on the dry side in a semi-sweet brown sauce with a few quail eggs strewn about. Halfway thru it, the rice showed up. My friend got a curry noodle dish with shrimp, again big bowl, little bit of food. It was decent enough but certainly not better or even as good as the food at say Saigon Grill (and theirs is a fraction of the price). Like I said, I was not impressed!

Fun at this Ave C Vietnamese outpost

So this place couldn't be more out of the way if it tried (I live way uptown), but it was worth the commute. Although we got crammed next to the "bar" and had to wait a bit for our table, we were rewarded with delicious Vietnamese food. I had spring rolls to start, which were nothing special. I then had the curry shrimp, which was very tasty. The menu is more pan-Asian than Vietnamese, but it offers a wide selection of tasty dishes, including vegetarian ones. They also have divine custom cocktails--reason alone to go back. I had the "perfume river," which was heavenly. The room is very chic in terms of decor, but it was pretty loud. The service was good fortunately, since those types of places tend to slip. Oh, yes, and if you want to try Vietnamese beer, just ask.

Snotty service and average food

The best part about this place is the drinks which were great. The food is average and even when the dining room is basically empty, they rudely rush you through your meal. The appetizers are good but the mains are expensive and not good. If you want attitude and mediocre food then you might enjoy this place.

Popularity Syndrome

This place is definitely suffering from a reaction to popularity. There was once a time when the waiters would be attentive, patiently walk you through the selections of foods and delectable cocktails, change your seating depending on availability. Now, they hurry you through ordering, don't really seem to know what's on the menu, and what's terrible is that I keep getting stuck in this corner seat where I feel claustrophobic and no matter of complaining has done any good the last couple of times. The food is as delicious as ever, while the dessert is what keeps me coming back. Maybe next time though, I will just order to go!

Awesome Food, Absolutely lousy service.

I do not believe that I have ever been to a restaurant with such extremes as this one. The food is an absolute dream. Absolutely declicious, affordable, adventurous, etc. The drinks are amazing as well, inventive. However, the service is completely awful. Perhaps its because the food is so good that there is a large demand for reservations. I made my reservations for 10:30 last Saturday night, a Summer weekend. I was relegated to waiting 45 minutes just to sit down. True, the owner bought us a round, but the wait blinded me against the food. I came out feeling as if I had been imprisoned and will likely never go back which is a shame because the food is amazing. I'll try their other restaurant over on 2d avenue. Hopefully its run better. As for this one, if they do take out, I'd do that, but as far as wasting another 2 1/2 hours of my life actually going there. Hell no.

Haute Vietnamese Dining without the Haughty Hipster Service!

A place where its food is better than its vaunted hipster reputation, Bao 111 offers simple but refined Vietamese food that rises above noodle shop fare but still keeps it comfortable with their specialty spring rolls, Pho, and crab meat soup. Don't be intimdated by its hipster image because the place is very warm and inviting with exceptional and attentive service.

I used to eat at this restaurant frequently and I agree it was once a great place, but not any more. The service and food has gone way down hill. The host (Chris) and waiters are rude and the food made my girlfriend and myself sick the past few times we went. It's a shame this place has turned into such a terrible restaurant, but until it improves it is neither worth the money nor the ride to avenue C.
