Way better than expected

After reading below reviews I was not looking forward to eating here, but I was pleasantly surprised. I went with 5 people and everyone's dishes were REALLY good and Bobby Flay was actually there working in the kitchen! I love mesa grill and this was just as good maybe a little better. I had the lobster club, I also tried a bite of the burger (really good!) and steak (really good!) and the fries were amazing. Our appetizer of chips with blue cheese was pretty good too. The only thing was prices were very high and our waiter was overbearing but it may be worth it. Oh and the sweet potato pie WAS AMAZING!

I was very impressed with the service and the food. My kids were with us and they shared a plate with no extra charges....a surprise in NYC. Our waiter was superb! My fish was divine. The wine list was awesome! A little over priced though.
Bland Food, Poor Service

My brunch item was the most bland and tasteless thing I had eaten in months! I waited for the waiter to return so I could advise her that something had obviously been left out, but she never again came back while we sat there for almost an hour! Even when she brought the check, she never said 'how was the meal' (althought mine remained almost 90% untouched) - so I simply paid and left with the intention never to return. The only staff we saw between ordering and paying was the person who refilled the water and the always lukewarm coffee A real disappointment.

food was incredible. i have been to mesa, and bar americain in my opinion is better. i got the coconut crab appetizer and the mussles and fries..... loved both of them, honestly one of the most amazing meals ive had..... but it was very expensive...

Went here for my graduation today. I read the reviews ahead of time and was concerned that I wouldn't enjoy it. I had an amazing experience at Bar Americain. The red snapper was great. My brother's duck was amazing and my mother's lamb was good. The crab cakes were delicious. The best part of the meal was that the waiter took it upon himself to SURPRISE me with a candle and "congratulations" written in chocolate icing on the yummy apple tart that I ordered for dessert. I can say with great certainty that I will return to this establishment again and again!
A Good Dining Experience

After reading several of the negative reviews of Bar Americain, I was a bit worried about making a reservation there. I am happy I decided to chance it because I thought the service and the food was really good. We went for lunch and were promptly seated. Our drinks arrived quickly after we ordered them followed by a tasty basket of bread. The onion cornbread was delicious. Our waiter was knowledgeable, very polite and attentive. He answered our questions about the menu and we placed or orders. Water glasses were promptly refilled, dishes and silverware were quickly wisked away and our waiter checked back during each course to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Business was brisk for lunchtime on a Monday. The food was served hot and everything was tasty and presented beautifully. I would recommend Bar Americain and I would certainly dine there again.
Most disappointing meal ever in NYC

2 years ago I had a really lovely meal here. Now it was an entirely different and awful experience - lousy entrees and an unforgivably bad waiter for this level establishment. It started off poorly when the12 year old waiter forgot to put in our rather simple drink order for over a half hour. When prompted, his response was that he too would be bothered - we should have been impressed by how kind it was of him to notice it was annoying? Then our astonishingly bad entrees arrived. The "steak knife" presented was utterly useless against the leathery pork chop and when asked for another, Mr. Jr High opinioned that it wouldn't be any sharper. The duck breast was equally poorly prepared, tasteless and difficult to saw apart. Despite rather good vegetable sides as the only edible portions of the meal and a bus boy was genuinely concerned (apparently the only staff in the entire restaurant to have noticed how bad the entire evening was going), never has the experience of eating out been so extremely disappointing and unpleasant. HORRIBLE PLACE - there are too many good places in this town to waste money or time on this awfulness.

The food was god awful and insulting- the guy below nails it. Gave a 2 for overall simply due to this crapateria having Six Point on tap.

My gf and I read good reviews of Bobby's place both here and in Zagats. Unfortunately, our experience turned out to be anything but good. Service during the entire evening was subpar at best. I spent nearly 10% of the evening with my head turned around like I had just landed the leading role in the Exorcist sequel looking for my waiter. Other waiters noticed my inability to find "my guy" but didn't do anything about it. Then the sommelier came... I told her I was in the mood for a nice Tuscan and wasn't looking to be economical in the selection. She recommended one which had to have been one of the worst reds imaginable. By the end of the evening it was undrinkable. Then the food came. The appetizers were mediocre but not horrid. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the main courses. We had the tuna and the mussels, both of which were absolutely disgusting. I've had better food on planes - flying economy!! Don't go! There are so many great places in this City and I assure you THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM!
Great dining experience

After reading other reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. Service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is warm and pleasant for such a large place. Here's what we had: Crab cakes-good but have had better. Fried green tomatoes with crispy duck-sounds weird, first bite tastes weird but it is a very inventive dish that I liked a lot. Rack of pork-perfectly cooked and seasoned, tender and juicy, can't imagine a piece of pork much better. Lamb chops-perfectly cooked and seasoned, they melt in your mouth, will make a lamb lover out of anyone. Great corn and collard tart too! Try the blackberry souffle. Recommended!
