Bobby at his best
By zinino on 6/13/2005
Flay's latest may not be as fiery as some would like, but in most respects--food, service, setting--Bar Americain is to me NY dining at its most satisfying. Try the artisanal ham tasting, the poussin, the rack of pork, and any shellfish. Bobby's cordial, tireless presence on the scene seems to insure excellence.

Bobby Flay's newest entry is clearing designed to capatilize on his "brand", especially given its tourist trade location. In fact, the service is so poor that serious diners, even those who are fans of Bolo and Mesa Grill are sure to be disappointed as we were. What Mr. Flay doesn't realize is that "branding" depends on customer satisfaction and substance. A brand is as much about the people who deliver it as it is about the product itself. Unfortunately, Bar Americain fails in both areas.
Very disappointed in Flay - I will NEVER go back

Unlike my experience at Bobby Flay's other restaurants, I left here truly regretting the money I spent. So much money for mediocre food and horrendous service. Mark this as another expensive NYC restaurant that is NOT WORTH IT. Take your money and spend it on better food somewhere else.
Be prepared to wait!

This place has OK food but the service is so bad it spoils the whole dinner. Just waiting to join my party already seated took 15 minutes, while others hugging and kissing the greeters were seated ahead of me. Our server was terrible he could not figure out the orders and who got what putting the wrong utensils and meals in front of the wrong people. This was a Tuesday night likely not the busiest it gets. We had to share a wine bucket with another table and were totally confused about where our wine went to, surely we didn't drink it all, maybe the other table got it. To add insult to injury we couldn't even get out of this place since we had to wait about 20 minutes to hunt down our server for a check. And to top it all off a member of our party did not even get her B&B which she ordered very clearly. Not receommending this place to anyone. Bobby stick with your other joints!!

I'm a little confused with some of the earlier reviews of Bar Americain citing bad service. I was there this past Saturday and was very happy with the attentiveness. While having a drink at the bar before we were seated, the bartender was nice enough to allow us sample a few types of gins after some friendly conversation. The service for dinner was equally impressive. The food of course doesn't disappoint! My guess, some of the earlier reviews may be more a reflection of ironing out the kinks of a new restaurant.

another case of the missing celebrity chef. i was on an expense account and felt ripped off ! a cavernous space where you can't hear yourself think, let alone carry on a conversation. nothing new or original on the menu

Selected based on what we read in American Way (AA's) magazine (Nov 2005). Expensive coctails (average); Wonderful salads (try the Wild Mushroom w/ Quinea); entres of Smoked Chicken and Pork Chop (both were excellent tasting and well presented); Sides of Fries and Sweet Potato Hash (excellent); Fried Chocolate Pie and Apple Crepes for dessert (excellent). Chef Flay was in the kitchen and his wife (Stepahnie March of L&O SVU fame) was enjoying a meal.
True dining experience

Sorry, if you gave this place a bad review then you should stick to fast food places. A truly great dining experience. From entering the door to leaving everything was perfect. Classic food with truly top notch professional service in a striking decor. Great from appetizer to dessert including a wonderfully created vegetarian plate that is not on the menu. A must go for anyone that loves to eat and enjoy the whole dining experience.
great overall restaurant

We have been to Bar Americain numerous times. The service is always amazing-the reception staff is always pleasant and accomodating, the bartenders are always friendly & attentive & helpful regarding questions about the specialty drinks (the dark & stormy is great), the table waitstaff is always friendly & attentive & helpful with any menu questions (lamb chops are amazing & the duck is superb). The food is always excellent and the atmosphere is fun & lively. Everyone from local friends to visiting out of towners that have dined with us loved it too. It may be pricier than some places but it is well worth it.
