Amazing wine list, great food, beautiful ambiance

The decor and ambiance of Bar Henry epitomizes old New York, class galore. I love the black and white checkered tile floors, antique bar, plush red chairs, and charming details throughout. My husband and I have been here on a few occasions and have sampled quite a few dishes. The Heritage chicken under a brick cooked over collard greens tastes sinfully delicious. I've order it twice and devoured every morsel. The short rib tacos, deviled eggs, and oysters are my favorite hors d'oeuvres. The oysters are fresh and accompanied well. My husband orders the fish and enjoys it immensely. We also sampled the salads and loved the arugula salad and the endive/watermelon salad over the summer. The wine list is impressive to say the least and the sommelier is incredibly knowledgable and helpful in the selection process. The half bottle concept is amazing for wine lovers. The staff has always been very gracious and accommodating. Besides the food and wine, the atmosphere gives me great pleasure to be immersed in. It's incredibly romantic and perfect for intimate conversations. My husband is a jazz aficionado so he thoroughly enjoys the music playlist which he says is impeccable. We will definitely be returning.

Dinner for 4 foodies a nice surprise; good to know a solid choice in the area. Started w/6 oysters, big & briny. Left wine up to the sommelier, having read his cv--a nice Albariño came. Wines decanted here. Articulate & knowledgeable waitress, a plus. Appetizers: blini & caviar, good; chicken liver mousse, smoother texture than I'm used to, but very good; a ceviche, good; the fave, shrimp cocktail w/huge gulf shrimp, not too cold, cocktail sauce w/fresh ginger. Entrees: a good Barolo came, for our 2 steaks, good sized, med.rare w/roast potatoes, quality for $29; roast chicken, moist, w/mashed potatoes w/chickenskin cracklings on top (yum); broiled trout cooked well, good flavor, w/arugula salad. Trout may have slight edge for our fave entree. A very pleasant experience & will return.

Shinny and new does not equal good

A group of 4 went for drinks and apps before dinner. My initial response was wow. When I walked out I said never again. As a self described wine bistro I would expect them to be more helpful with a better wine selection. Two of us described what we liked and the waitress and sommelier both recommended something on their “Market” board, which was 2 glasses for $46. It was nothing like what we wanted. When we ordered a second round the sommelier pressured us to buy an even more expensive half bottle. When the bill came the first “2 glasses” ordered were really $46 PER GLASS! This was protested since we were lead to believe it was for both glasses. The response was simply “sorry” and a cheap glass of champagne delivered. No class and no service.
