Paul De Bari has moved on, so this review is an update, not a contradiction. It's still the same cranky staff, just overpriced food.

It's like visiting a warm, raucous family

The staff, the folks at the bar, everyone is just so warm and welcoming. And the food is not just good, but fun -- I mean, why not eat those delicious roasted artichokes with your fingers? There's serious food too, of course -- I had a truly nice steak last time I went. And on that subject -- the steak came exactly as I ordered it, yet when I decided that this particular cut of meat would taste better rarer, they replaced it, no questions asked. This is a place that truly believes the customer's always right.

Too Expensive, but Good Food and Good Location

I really like the food at Bar Stuzzichini. The problem is that all of the pastas and entrees are about $3-5 too expensive for what they are. Atmosphere isn't worth the extra dough, IMO, so I always end up leaving a little bit dissatisfied.

Unique, delicious, memorable

Color me bourgeois, but I haven't found too many places where I can enjoy octopus followed by rabbit while sipping on an eclectic selection of Italian beers. Bar S is a niche entry into the crowd for sure, but for what it tries to be, it succeeds.

Memorable Food Experience

Our party, one from NYC, two from LA, and two from Canada had a fantastic experience here in May 2010. Our dining area was comfortable and the server was knowledgeable, opinionated, and speedy. I really liked being able to taste so many different flavours and textures. The main items I remember were the olives, the scamorza, the pecorino, and the panelle. The manager was especially welcoming. We felt like we were dining in his home. Definitely give this place a try...and try many different items!

Good for the neighborhood

There are two good things about Bar Stuzzichini: it's so huge, you can reliably get a table, and the food is really pretty good. But the staff is uniformly brusque, absent and unfriendly and the space is yawning and dark. Still, when you're out shopping on a Saturday or going to a movie, it's a very good place (in a neighborhood without much choice) to eat some small plates and drink some wine. Okay, three good things.

The worst service in town.

We arrived before our friends, and were told our table was empty and we'd be seated shortly. Twenty minutes passed. When we asked what was going on, the hostess said her manager told her he'd only seat the entire party. She, of course, didn't bother telling us. When we finally were allowed to our table, the service got even worse: our wine, which we ordered as soon as we sat down, arrived well after most of us had already finished the main course. The food was mediocre, too. A complete disaster.

This is probably the worst dining experience I’ve had in a New York restaurant. Everyone, from the hostess to the manager and the wait staff, was extremely rude, which didn’t stop them from tacking on a mandatory 20 percent gratuity to our party’s bill. The food, when it finally arrived, was mediocre; thankfully, the portions, too, were small. The wine came too late for us to enjoy. This, too, is fine, as the wine list is overpriced and underwhelming. In short, never again.

Awful service, terrible experience

The service here stands out as remarkably bad. We were treated very rudely by the hostess and manager when we arrived; this was the worst experience I've had in a NYC restaurant. The wine list is very expensive for the forgettable offerings, and the bottles cost about four times more than the quartinos, which makes no sense. The food portions are tiny and unsatisfying. The arancini were delicious, the meatballs really mediocre, and the soppressata truly disgusting. The crispy lemon chicken was dried out and pretty gross. The special steak was tasteless and too thin, but the orrecchiette was simple and very good. Overall, the horrendous service could not be made up for by the underwhelming food.

Don't take a chance on this one

Tried ignoring the bad service reviews to focus on the food, but sadly even that was dismal. Fried artichoke was a tasteless papery crisp, rice balls cheesy and bland. Gnocchi had nice texture but the sauce ruined it: dime-sized chopped raw onions showed the carelessness of its preparation. Worst of all was the service: our flustered waiter ignored our large group most of the night, perhaps because he was guaranteed a 20% tip. Later apologized for ignoring us but did nothing about it. Spilled my coffee, promised to get a new cup but later said he wouldn't because the barista was backed up. Took an hour to drop the check (including $75 tip) but never said thanks or good night. Manager also was testy when confirming the reservation and when we arrived. Not a friendly or well-run place.
