Romance is alive and well
By BigSigh on 8/13/2014
Feeling a little jet lagged and lonely, I met up with a friend here on Tuesday night and was delighted. I did not eat anything but had a couple glasses of rose. My friend had a goat cheese salad which was good apparently. The waittress was delightful, wearing amazing pants - imprinted with 70s technolcolor women images, and I was immediately smitten. Aside from the charming service, the place was packed, they had a live band and this place seems so Mediterranean in all the best ways. It makes one feel good to be alive, and the scene and friendliness makes me wish to head to tabac as to see an old friend.
Horrible beyond imagination

Horrible experience! Food was tasteless and just old. Filet mignon tasted like it was 2 weeks old. Pate was horrendous, and stale bread (had to ask twice) is not even worth mentioning. However the abominable service and manager's rudeness made this horrific place unforgettable in a bad way and made me write this review. Upon complaining about "cleanliness" of our table and a place in general the manager was called and asked us if everything was ok. When we answered "it was not great" we were told to LEAVE NOW in a very rude arrogant way. We travel a lot so we dine out and explore different places on a daily basis in NYC and abroad. I do understand occasional little mishaps however I rarely experienced something as awful as this place.

My husband and I love going here when we can, usually there is a group of us. We have had to wait sometimes, but nothing long enough to make me go somewhere else. We always enjoy getting the calamari app, and the mussels are wonderful! They are always busy, but be patient, you are there to eat and enjoy your company.

Great in all
Worst Service Ever
By Boerum_Hill_Hunger on 4/24/2009
I have stopped going to Bartabac entirely after a run of bad experiences. The service is lousy. The food is oily and the people that run the place are jerks. I once had to wait 45 minutes during a slow lunch service to place an order. I recommend Char down smith street, which has food in a similar price range and courteous knowledgeable staff. Jolie on Atlantic Avenue is far from perfect, but if you have to get your French food, eat there. It also has seating outside in the back. I know the sidewalk cafe of Bartabac is tempting, but I would rather buy a ticket to France and wait in airport security. I would probably get my food quicker that way, too.
Good comfort food.

Great classic French dishes like French Onion Soup & Moules. Great frites too! For photos & more descriptions, go to: http://eatbrooklynfood.blogspot.com/2008/09/french-onion-soup-moules.html

After my dinner there this weekend I have finally learned my lesson and will never go back. The service at this place is consistently absolutely awful. The waitress and bus boy were both rude. I saw at least two roaches and the fish special that I had tasted as if it were microwaved. Considering that there are about twenty other restaurants on Smith Street I recommend not wasting your time and going to this one!
Love/Hate relationship with Bar Tabac
By madhatnyc on 5/7/2008
I have a love/hate relationship with this place. Most of the time I feel extremely rushed by the waiters, but I love their outdoor sidewalk tables so I keep going back. I had a really bad brunch experience there too. My friend ordered a veggie omelet and when she was half done, she started finding HAM in it. We complained to the waitress, who was very gracious. However, the manager started bitching about us in French behind our backs... too bad for him I speak French and read him the riot act. Another time I saw a huge roach crawling up the wall. I said something to my waiter, he caught it, but didn't even say thank you or apologize... All that said, I probably will go back because they have a killer steak sandwich and it's such a cute corner. What to do...
THE best neighborhood bistro in NYC
By Nastaran on 3/9/2008
The food, service and everything in general, all around about Bar Tabac is wonderful. The music is also great; they bring wonderful musicians who play some of the best classics. If you're obnoxious and impatient you shouldn't expect, like ANYWHERE in NY, to get the quickest response...otherwise they take very good care of regulars or pleasant people.
good service.... attractive waiters

food is rather good, the environment is friendly and laid back... the best part about it are the attractive waiters
