Food isn't bad but is exorbitantly overpriced. Think $15-20 for a fairly modest sandwich that is nothing special. Comparable quality can easily be found at 1/3 the price.

I have lived in NY for about 2 years and I am a definite "foodie"! I have heard about Barney Greengrass since I moved so when my parents came to visit recently I thought this would be a great slice of New York to take them to. If you don't mind greasy waiters who look like they haven't bathed in a few days, rude "colorful" attitudes, truly over-priced cuisine, and a rushed dining experience on a relaxing Sunday, this place is for you. If you expect good service, respectful attitudes, and a decent omelette, go somewhere else! Their fish is delicious but after the way you're treated in the restaurant, it would prove difficult to stomach even the most amazing sturgeon. You can find better fish and service anywhere else in NY. The hostess literally "swung" by our table as we were finishing up our coffee and said "you need to come and pay at the register, we have people waiting." We had been there a very lengthy 45mins. Get over yourself "Barney Greengrass".

A friend an I went for lunch, having heard about the excellent lox and sable they serve. I ordered the sable sandwich @$12 and my friend the nova sandwich at around the same price. What we got would incense anyone! Served on a VERY small bagel were 3 slices of Sable on mine and 3 slices of nova on my friend's. The waiter disappeared, and mind you its difficult, the place is small, and we ate with complaint. It was good, but trust me, it was NOT worth even 1/2 the menu price. Go to Nobu, at least you'll see someone famous instead of getting robbed like we did!

Best restaurant in NYC for smoked fish. Sturgeon is awesome. The place in NOT kosher with milk and meat being served together. Forget the decor (When was last paint and paper applied?). Great place to people watch. Get there early on the weekends and you won't wait long.

So you're relatives have come into town and you've taken them from one tip of the island to the other all in one weekend and now you need to find a restaurant for the all important bagel and fish eat-a-thon...well look no further. Though the dining room is drab, you'll barely have time to look up from your feeding frenzy. The fish is excellent, the bagels are fresh and sides like omelettes (as if you need them) are tasty. All of this doesn't come cheap and the wait can be endless (especially when you show up with a large group) but the family will beg you to take them back on their next visit.

I tried hard to talk myself into 'getting into' eggs with salmon, eggs with salami, or any of the other anachronistic choices this shop offers. The grease-slicked plate staring me in the face compelled otherwise. Seems to have plenty of loyal customers, seems best left to them. Has a New Yorky feel, but the yellow lighting (or is it the dingy walls) failed to charm. Serves the kind of food I really don't eat or enjoy all that much.

You enter through the take-out department, where smoked fish, herring, bottled borcht and rugalach rule. It feels as if you've entered the 50's. To the left a small line is generally waiting (at least during weekend brunch hours) to get into the small eating area, where tables are jammed together. The menu is long, but basically it's cream cheese and a variety of smoked fish on bagels (every type imaginable) or combinations of eggs with nova & onions (the best) or eggs and meats (corned beef, salami, etc.) Prices are high - something like $15 for one of these plates and they go up if you want to indulge in a combination plate. The owner will come by with refills of coffee, a basket of bagels and a familiar greeting. It's a one of a kind and brings back the old days in a great way. If you're in a rush, forget it.

Barney Greengrass is a truly unique establishment. The ambience there is like no other place in the city - that classic kosher fish restaurant with old, grumpy, mysterious characters eating salami and scrambled eggs. Everyone there is quiet, but you can tell they're all having a great time. The sodas come in old classic coca cola bottles, and the sandwiches are always fresh and reliable. Have a nova and sturgeon sandwich on a bagel- it's fabulous.

You will not find better smoked fish anywhere. The chopped liver is outstanding, as are all the deli meats, especially the pastrami. The two room , store is tiny and very formica oriented but that just adds to the New York kitsch. The waits are long but worth it. You can kibbitz with Gary Greengrass as he rings up his customers, takes care of business, and still keeps you laughing. No New York trip is complete without a visit to Barney Greengrass.

I've been going to this UWS institution for years, and it amazes me how the staff here can always greet you with a smile, even amidst the crowded mayhem. The food is always fresh and the matzo ball soup can't be beat.
