I love porterhouse steaks, I am a Peter Luger fan. However, (a) its a schlep to Williamsburg, and (b) its a pain to make sure I have enough cash, PL does not take credit cards. I have tried Wolfgangs, The Palm, Ruth Chris, Mortons, Shulas, Strip House, and Smith and Wollensky, all of which are pretty decent but are not as good or as consistent as Peter Luger. I tried Bobby Vans and was pleasantly surprised. The porterhouse is excellent, never as good as Peter Lugers but good enough to avoid points (a) and (b) above. The sides we ordered, creamed spinach, asparagus, and mashed potatoes were also quite good and the portions were quite generous. The only thing I will not recommend is the Harrys Salad, it is severily overpriced, vinegary, small and with a scant quantity of seafood (lobster?). Yes, Bobby Vans is expensive: porterhouse is $46/person, Coke is $3.50/8 ounces, sides are $9 - $11. But the quality of the food is worth paying the price. If you want to keep costs down, skip appetizers, go directly to the porterhouse, split two sides, and split a Tiramisu (is fresh, delicious and huge).

We arrived in New York and asked the conceirge for a recommendation and we weren't disappointed. With charming and helpful waiters, attentive service, cosy and classic decor, and steaks that melt in your mouth we couldn't have asked for more. The atmosphere was relaxed and not at all pretentious. It had a classy American feel, that is not to say that it is at all 'touristy', it was very relaxing and comfortable. The food and drink portions were generous and you did get a lot for your money. It was a little pricey but totally worth it and we'll definitely be visiting again the next time we cross the pond!
